I was just wondering what the possibility of having a stainless exhaust fabricated would be. I deal with quite a few fabricators in work and could get one made up at a reasonable price.
I have a standard backbox and decats at the moment. The backbox is in good condition and manifolds are not bad so I was wondering if the section between the two could be done in stainless? Also how much of a job would it be to remove the manifolds to sort everything out while it was off the car and use the old exhaust system as a pattern?

Cheers,

Ed.

I think getting the manifold off is a pain. Some say it is an engine out job, others a gearbox out job and others state you can do it with a bit of wiggling. I think that people who have had systems made have spent around £7-800 on the system, not sure about fitting - So it can be done.

I'm not sure what you'd gain from getting something fabricated unless it was significantly cheaper. There's several companies already make exhaust systems for TVR's. Sometimes it's worth paying just a little more to ensure you get it right/correct fit etc.

A good example are prices from ACT

I'd say the opposite, as I've seen a few of the aftermarket systems need quite a lot of adjustment and modifying in order to fit properly, this to a degree is to be expected as no two cerbs are the same......

You'd be getting a bespoke system made that would be perfectly mated to your car, you can get all of the hangers remade and have the bore at whatever you like. Build quality will be as good as if not better than the ones on the market at the moment. Cost wise you'll pay between £600-£1000 for a full system depending on who builds it for you. Finally, you'll have a one off system that nobody else has......

Quite a few of the systems I have fitted have required adjustments due to poor alignment etc and quite often the fannyfolds have been over welded and so touch the chassis.

I tend to use Quicksilver exhausts, very well made, just fitted one to a Testarossa..stunning sound and look.

But it depends on you budget..If you guys can fabricate one to match the original and its cheap then excellent.

Ps the folds can be awkward especially the bolts closest to the baulkhead

Thanks for the help,

I have arranged to meet the fabricator in a couple of weeks if the price he gives me gives a worthwhile saving I think i'll give it a go. If i'm sticking with the original manifolds and original backbox is there any point in altering the bore of the exhaust?

cheers,

Ed

Ed,

It might be worth getting him to quote for Cat back, the two centre pipe sections should be very easy and cheap to replicate, it's getting them to make the back boxes that is a little more time consuming. When I had mine made I asked them to base it on the existing "sports exhaust" system but that I wanted the two centre pipes to be 2.5in and I wanted the pipes that go into the back box also 2.5in, keep the back boxes about the same dimensions and then produce 3-3.5in tails. I also requested additional stability of the boxes so they linked / braced the two pipes before the back boxes.

See how you go.

Jules.
