Sorry to bore you all with *another* exhaust post, but I need a new rear section and having just had my wrists slapped for 4 consequtive days at the rings for being too bloody noisy (115db @ 2.8k on decatted sports pipes), I think I'm best to bite the bullet and get something a wee bit quieter.

Anyone got any direct experience of the Blue Flame offering? Rough guess at db levels with and without the "db killers"?

Otherwise, I'll probably go for the ACT system with the centre bullet silencers, which still gives me the option of deploying the trackday silencers for the really strict UK tracks (banned at the ring though, as they extend beyond the body of the car).

I think Simonkd had the Blue flame exhaust on, when he first bough his car.

That was extremely loud, plus he didn't like the look of it on the car.

I've got poor taste, and thought it was excellent smile

For what its worth, my experience of Blue Flame exhausts on other cars (Scoobies and Evos in point of fact) is that they are about as loud as you could possibly make an exhaust, and with an unpleasant drone too.

Hi Neil

Can't tell you what they sound like with the dB killers in as I never put them in but as Russell say they were bloody loud without them even with my cats intact. IMO they did look a bit "Max Power" though because of the way they flair out at the ends.

Regards
Simon

What's the noise limit at the ring then? ACT's system is 107db on my car, could be quieter with the cats in or their cat replacement bullet silencers.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've just spoken to Tim @ ACT who's given me a few ideas about what to do.

I find it pretty hard to believe that the Blue Flame one can do what it says (i.e. get you below 98db) with only one silencing can and a tiny rear insert (unless that insert is basically just a big cork that you stick up the tail!)

Strictly speaking it's 95db, although they have discression to take that up to 100db.

Individual discession obviously goes a little further, as on day 1 they let me on regardless of my 115 reading, and the guy wrote it down on his sheet as 102.

Funnily enough, it was your system that I've just been discussing with Tim (at least I assume it's yours from the info he gave me), so I'm looking at keeping the decat pipes and having a sports system with the bullets, rear cans, and removable tails which can be replaced with a couple of long thin silencers which will stay within the confines of the bodywork.

It's also worth looking at silencing in the cats back section before the tails. The 3.5" silencers in mine have kept the noise on my new big bore system down to the level of the old unsilenced cats back pipes.

I think we're talking about the same thing - when I said bullets I mean in the cat-back section before the rear cans, not the cat replacement cherry bombs (leave that avenue open for the future if I want to lower the levels further).

There's three options available to my knowledge. The cat replacement bullet silencers, the inline silencers in the mid section and finally bolt on/off tails for the pipes, one option being a plain pipe and the other being extra silencing. I have mid section silencers only and Mrs T and I are agreed that it gives a good sound windows down, but is quiet enough windows up not to be too much of a drain on longer journeys. It's certainly more pleasant than the old straight through option that went before it. The bolt on/off tails might be a good choice for the track. I don't know if the bullets would be needed in addition to them, to drop the noise levels enough to pass the more stringent tests.

Mine looks like this:

I discussed the bolt on/off tails with Tim but we decided on the quietest system to give me a good fighting chance to get below the 100db with the bolt on additional cans. The tailpipes look really small compared to the old SP one, but at least they don't knock and damage my bodywork.

The Bolt on/off tails look a really good idea though - someone had those at Brands last year.

I guess you could also fit the bullet Cat replacements for additional silencing if required, but as my clatter cam car is 107db at 4K revs I'm guessing yours may be quieter still, 105db?

Interesting is the ACT system seems to have a deeper noise than the SP system, but I drove it home the other night with the windows wide open t Cerbera motorway speeds and it sounded great.

Does the Ring not like bolt on cans then?

no they don't. Got told to take mine off, then (funnily enough) failed the noise meter.

Was told that the cans stuck out too far.

Anything that protrudes beyond the end of the bodywork is strictly verbotten.

Dave - I've pretty much decided to go for the same system as you, except I'm going to have the removable end pieces in a 2.5" bore, so that I can get the slim in-board silcencers if I decide to at a later date, and carry on using my external trackday cans as necessary in the meantime.

Hey Neil

Anyone that doubts how loud your car was at the ring, take it from me, it made my ears ring for about an hour after just a single lap
