Engine running fine, temp gauge OK, fans coming on, water in system.

However, if I lift the bonnet I can see, every 30-seconds or so, a puff of steam from the expansion bottle cap.

Do these caps wear out?

If the cap is OK I assume there is too much pressure in the system cause by the water temperature being too high.

Suggestions welcome.

Get a new cap from a vw dealers and see if that cures it, iirc they are from a golf gti, not sure exactly which model, but if you take the cap in with you they should id it.

Tried a new expansion bottle cap and its worse. Steam puffing out from under the cap.

Regarding the level, when standing by the side of the car and looking in the expansion bottle there are two openings side-by-side aligned along the car (facing the passenger seat) and one opening aligned across the car (facing the engine). The single opening is higher than the two side-by-side.

When cold, the water is below all three openings. As the engine warms, the water flows in through the two smaller openings and eventually rises to cover all three openings. I assume this is right because it has been like this for a year without trouble.

When cold, should the water cover any or all the openings?

If I leave the car idling, the water temperature rises and the fans start cycling on and off. After two or three cycles steam starts coming from under the cap.

I've checked the temperature of the water rails with an infrared thermometer. For some reason the offside is reading 95ish but the nearside is reading 112.

Any ideas before I start ripping it to pieces?

Water levels a bit low, mine was like that, it should be level with the seam on the bottle, according to the handbook, but will probably spit a wee bit out and find its own level. If the temperature gauge jumps about a bit when you rev it , indicates an airlock. A quick bleed should sort it.
