My pressure drops quite badly on left handers and hard braking, unless the oil is right up on the "full" marker on the dipstick. Should I worry about this?

It's not bad, just when the oil is nice and hot in this sunny weather.

Sounds like the oil is thinning a lot. Are you using a synthetic of the right viscosity?

My 4.2's always done that on anything less than full. I'm not that confident on the accuracy of the dipstick, especially as after a service, the reading is a fair bit higher than the max level.
I haven't checked it yet, post rebuild, but if it's higher than full , I'm sticking a new mark on the stick.

I'd suggest an empty out, refill & a new mark on the stick smile

Quick oil tips.

To check, warm the engine to 90 coolant by driving around.
Park on a level surface.
Idle for 1-2 mins
Stop engine and leave for 5-10 mins
Check the level.

It should be ON the MAX mark. Not above, not below.

If you run it lower than max then your chances of seeing surge is more likely.

So it should be on max when nice and hot then?

OK, I'll have a look tonight.

. . . I'd also suggest you take out the dipstick as soon as possible after switching off - more chance of getting a decent reading when re-inserting and withdrawing again . . . oooooerrrr missuswink

This is due to low oil. You may also notice a faint 'groaning' sound as well.

As previously stated the dipdtick is not all that accurate, but make sure you keep it topped up.

I am not sure slight overfill is such a bad thing as several specialists have suggested this to me, if participating in track days for example.

be careful with oil levels. I have lost 2 engines due to oil surge especially under heavy braking donwhill. (My car spends alot of time on tracks) I now keep it over filled by at leat 5mm on the dip stick
