Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat
Discussion
Right, now I'm a bit less worried about oil, I have another couple of questions that you good people could help me with...
I'm not sure my cats are much kop. What are the symptoms of a colapsed cat, or restricted exhaust?
My car seems to pick up really badly on light throttle which makes town driving a pain in the bum, with every junction either risking a stall, or revving to about 3k to pull off... which makes you look a tit. Now that could be a poor map, mixed with the long intake and cam profile making low revs lumpy I suppose. If I blip the throttle, it's more likely to drop revs and stall than rev. If I hold the throttle op[en a bit, it'll dip, then, assuming it doesn't stall, it will rise normally. It's fine when moving. It's also suffering from hot restart issues at the moment, but I assume that's fairly common.
Also, the car stinks, I'm not sure what of, but it's not really fuel, or oil (I suppose maybe burning oil, but there's no smoke), or plastic, or the clutch... I suppose it could be cooking fibreglass or similar. A sort of plasticky smell, but more dusty.. if that makes sense?
Now, I'm wonderng if this could point to a knackered cat. I assume low velocity exhaust would clog up the system and cause poor idle and pick up, and the stink could either be the cat itself, or symptoms of the heat caused by a knackered cat (1 million degrees melting my car).
Paul at PPC has said before that he thinks my exhaust is restricting the car a bit, but he seemed to suggest it was the "sports" exhaust that was causing it, rather than the cats, and suggested I look at the silverstone exhaust or something.
Also, and I know this is subjective, but it does feel like there's less pressure at the right tailpipe (from the back) than the left, as if there is a restriction in the pipe. Not much, but I asked a mate to see if he thought one was less than the other and he picked the same one as me.
So... waddayathink?
