As above, and she's started to run very rough? Could this be the big fuse? The batt earth seems on strong

Sounds like an alternator fault.

When you say very rough...? Got a better description? Flickering lights normally indicates an electrical fault, 100amp faulty, alternator, bad earth, shorting out somewhere.
Rough running? Spluttering? Full, part throttle? Throttle pot feeds shorting maybe?

when on the move she's fine, although I think she has less power, but when at idle will sit at 1400 ish rpm, then for no reason will drop to 700 ish and hunt up & down a bit & sound very rough, almost as if she's missing on some cylinders and will sometimes cut out, fuel economy is a little worse as well....

Just drove into work and she was fine when cold but then as she got hot started to play up again.

Any ideas on this? I think the flickering lights and rough running are a different fault.....

I like to do all my own work so any pointers on what to start looking at would be great, she's going in for a service soon, but I prefer to get my hands dirty most of the time as I have a pit etc and would like to take her in for the service running well.

Have you got a laptop and the Cerb diagnostic software Brett? You could hook that up first and check the adaptives and T/pots to see if they're way out.

I've not had a problem with USB to serial ports, others have though. Worth a go though. I move the com ports around (i.e. trackerball, modem etc) so that the USB to serial device is presented as Com1 then have no issues.

I'd check the big fuse first though.

Right, i've found a USB-serial cable from maplin for £12, how do I get a 3pin plug for my ECU (mine is a 98 so will be 3 pin?) anyone got a link etc to someone selling one?

If I get all the bits together I could knock up a few cables if people need them?
