i fitted a new cd player and now my horn doesnt work.

i also attached some velcro to the steering wheel instrument control box and stuck it to something under the dash. i have made sure the ribbon cable is not kinked or touching metal or anything like that. all other steering wheel functions work bar the horn.

any ideas, does it have its own fuse? where is the fuse board? and where is the horn.

i think my cold blower wont come on either if that could be connected to something? im not sure though as the car was making too much noise for me to be certain that they werent on or off.

You don't need the engine running to check if the fan's are working, just touch the starter button to click the ignition on (don't forget to 'plip' the immobilser off).
The fuse box is in the boot, on the driver side up on the right, pull off the velcro attached cover. (TVR were the major shareholders in Velcro Plc.
The Horn fuse is No 8 - counting from the front of the car - and is shared with the inside courtesy lamps and cigarette lighter, so if they are all working chnces are it's not the fuse.
The Horns themselves are located in the lower 'mouth' of the car.

Good fun these Cerbs arent they ?? smile

The ribbon connection on the back of the steering wheel can play silly buggers sometimes, mine likes to catch me out with the wipers sometimes, i give it a clobber and they are coaxed back into life! ( must do that one day ) You can short circuit the connections as you go along to eliminate the low voltage side.

right my horn is really doing my sweed in now.

everything works in the car bar the horn. ive had the steering wheel off and checked the wires weren't pinched or shorting to the steering wheel boss, ive had the button off the wheel and the 2 contacts to the back of the button are good.

ive located the horns and cleaned the spade connecters on them and they are all good now, i have a volt meter on the wires and had someone press the buton but no voltage. if i did a continuity test when i touched the live and the earth with the volt meter prongs it beeped making a circuit.

what does this suggest? are my wires touching somewhere? if so wouldnt that make the horns sounds?

any help is appreciated. i did try and track the wires back but i cannot find them, i could only find the wires for the rad fans (are the wires hidden inside the fibreglass to make it look neater.

Still sounds like ribbon cable. You could take it off and and continuity check it.

Another easy test you could do is disconnect the hormn and put a false feed on it to check it works. Mind your ears!

Did you check you had a +ve feed at the button when you had it apart?

i didnt have the button apart, i poped it out of the wheel and looked at the 2 wires to the back of the button, they were coated in white silicone or something, i gave them a pull and they seemed to be on solid enough.

where does the ribbon cable come from and got to?

i volt tested the wires to the horn and no current was picked up so i presume the horns do work (they did work when i had the car and worked until i messed about putting a different cd player in it.

there is a black box unit under the steering column whihc was loose and dangling about, but i have fixed that to underneath the dash and checked the ribbon cable to it and ade sure it was kinked or scuffing on any metal bits.

any help is appreciated

I'd agree with Buffoon, it does sound like the most likely culprit is the Ribbon cable. You said you took the wheel off and the connections looked OK, but did you check the whole of the ribbon cable? I'm sure if you had you would have written a few more swear words about what a pain it was to get it back in ! smile

no i removed the small pad with the horn and main beam button and checked the conections, i undid the wheel from the boss and checked the wires (no ribbon at this point) and that was it.

if i drop the steering column down i can see a ribbon cable going by it and from there i dont know.

Take the sterring wheel off, big nut right in the centre, remove it, than give the wheel a good sharp tug and off it comes. Inside there is a ribbon cable, it's about 6 ft long and is spiralled round inside the wheel boss, If your not careful you'll understand the why I said you'll probably end up swearing, as the whole cable un-spiralls itself! Good fun though and it has to be done i'm afraid!
The cable has 2 multi pin connectors at each end, and the multi pin connector inside the wheel boss should be glued in, It is very common for the cable to chafe through exposing the wires inside it, or to come away from the connectors.

Shayne

I can't see any mention of checking the relay!

The horn button cannot take the current required to sound the horns, so it must go through one of the relays in the fuse box.

I think it is relay 6, top Right. ETA!
If it not clicking then button or ribbon cable or connections between or relay itself (swap and try again).

If it is clicking then either relay contacts are burnt (happened inside my alarm!!) or wiring between it and horn.

ok ill give the relay a go later and then if i have no joy i will remove the wheel and pray the cable doesn't unspiral. i had the same problem on my old golf, the air bag or horn ribbon unravelled and it took me hours getting it back in and being able to clip all the plastic covers back over it again.

right i cant hear the realy clicking, i had a good fiddle under the dash, made sure all the ribbon cables were tidy and noy kinked or touching metal etc.

i started to get the steering wheel off, un-done the 17mm bolt in the centre of the wheel and then realised i didnt have the right size allen key for the 4 bolts holding the boss down. i only had socket allen key bits and they fouled the inner of the boss ring. so i had to put it all back together in order to drive it later that day.

when looking at the fuse box,top right i presume will be the closest top corener to the back end of the car? there i have a big black relay and a smaller yellow relay. is it the yellow one for the horn?

All that holds the wheel on is that 17mm nut - you don't need to undo the Allen head nuts. Remove the nut and give the wheel some sharp bangs and tugs, and it will come off. Don't be too scared of the ribbon cable un-spiralling, it's fiddly to get back in, but nothing to be scared of. All the symptoms you describe point to the ribbon cable being the most likely culprit, so get it checked! smile
