Right, I've done a search and haven't come up with an answer.

What is the difference with linked and non linked decat pipes? And any suggestions on which ones to go for? I have a 97 4.2

Linked produced a little bit more back pressure as I understand it, thus are purported to be better for power than straight through, they are also said knock the DB's down a touch more than a non. Non linked are just pipes really and easy to produce so I think are usually cheaper.... I have non linked and am perfectly happy, unless you are HP chasing I don't think there will be a whole lot in it, if you want a noisier beast then stick with non linked and save yourself £40 or so.

I should caveat all that with a "I am a technical and mechanical numpty" of course - someone will no doubt come along and tell me I have missed the main feature of linked and come up with a stonking reason you should buy them over the non's. Maybe hold fire from pressing a buy button and see if I get shouted down biglaugh

Decats and sports pipes will make your car very noisy inside at speeds over 70 MPH (but you'll only notice it on tracks and the Autobahn of course).

But it does sound cool.

Yup - My testing indicates cats cut the noise by 8-10db. 10db is effectively twice as loud!

id go with the non-linked de-cats as it has not been proved but damage to ajp engines have bin asosiated with linked decats burning the two rear pistons, this is thought to be because it is two four cylider engine's strap'd together not a normal v8 so the linked pipe is not adding the same benifits

so by the same assumption, if you made an exhaust with both banks of cylinders eventually merging into one pipe this would in effect damage the pistons as well?

hows that then?

I'd like to know more please before you start blaming something I sell .. Who's blaming linked decats, who's done the diagnosis ? As far as I'm aware there's only me and silverstone performance selling them so I'm sure they would love to know as much as me about your post ..

Absolutely. The anecdotal evidence that a car belonging to someone on here developed a fault, and that it happened to have linked decats is by no means proof to suggest that linked decats are a danger to your car. More relevant is the statistically far more significant number of cars that are runnging fine with this modification fitted. Seems like media-esk scare mongering to me, and not at all fair when it puts into question the otherwise excellent reputation of a well known cerb tuner.

That said, I run straight decats cos I love the noise biggrin

Back on topic. biggrin

Tim @ Act also sells cherry bomb decats and they sound fantastic with sports boxes, giving a deeper note and not too noisy. Mine has been measured at around 105db at 4500 rpm with them.
