Helmet Type for Track day
Discussion
BS6658-85 TypeA/FR - Type A is the basic standard required by MSA, but I believe its equivelent to the following:
FIA 8860 - 2004
SA 2005/2000
SFI 31.1A/31.2A
AFAIK the compliance standards in mortorbike helmets went down another path 3/4 years ago (EC2250 and ACU Gold), and have some different stipulations like external vents easily detatching when you use your head as a brake.
I bought a new helmet for my brother for Chirstmas, and none of the ones in two motorbke shops we went into conformed to any of the standards on the top list (although we were only going to get the sizing properly right).
In the end the cheapest conforming full-face helmet I found was an OMP Veloce, from Ears Motorsport at £85 + P&P. http://www.ears.co.uk/motorsport/acatalog/Online_C...
I'm sure there are plenty that will argue the "if you've got an £85 head, buy and £85 helmet" (a paraphared advertising slogan from one of the most expensive helmet manufacturers, incidently), but personally, I'm of the opinion that, if it meets the (very stringent) BS standard, and is very widely used by the rally boys at a variety of levels, then it's good enough for me. I'm sure there are those who feel safer/happier with £500 of Arai wrapped around their bonce, and good on them, but personally, I'd rather spend the extra £400 on better brakes, tyres etc to avoid a crash in the first place.A good fit is more important than anything else IMO.

In SPRINT they actually list what helmet you need for the track day tomorrow at castle combe - but of course I've reccyled it.
I'm sure they match the ones suggested by Nefarious for the car, but am sure they list a motorbike type as well.
Anyone got a copy to flick through quickly?
Cheers

Helmets & noise limitsMB
MSV circuits require a full driving license and all helmets must conform to BS6658-85 type A (A/FR), or Snell SA2000 or 2005. Bike helmets must be FIM/ACU stamped in gold or silver.
No license and helmet on the day?
No drive and unfortunately no exceptions!
Look s like you're good with any decent bike helmet then...you owe me a pint.
I've *never* seen anyone checking kite-marks at a trackday - if your just doing TDs then as long as it vaguely looks helmet shaped you'll be fine. My reasoning for getting a BS-approved one was a) so I could do the odd Sprint/Hillclimb if I fancied (not that I ever have!) and b) because it's properly fit-for-purpose (i.e. in-car use).
