Difficult one to answer I know but on average what would be the life expectancy of a 4.5 engine built in 2001 if it has been doing around 6000 Miles a year.

Is it the Cams that tend to go first, I heard the bottom end is quite strong on these engines..

Any advice appreciated..

Found the thread thanks very helpful. It does seem that the later 4.5's seem a bit more robust however if I am buying a 2001 with say 43k on the clock then surely it has been used for longer runs than some 98 models with 25k on the clock and as we all know it is key turns from cold that kill an engine not running at 4000 RPM with it all warmed up.. Or am I being too logical here..

A well looked after AJP should do big miles...Allowing them to warm up properly before thrashing the pants off them is vital...They also respond well to being used and not sitting in a garage

I would seriously doubt that there is enough data to make a decent statistical analysis of engine life. There are far too many external influences too, such as an army of previous owners with many/most of them.

Technically an engine shouldn't need a rebuild if it's had regular oil changes and there's nothing actually wrong with it. I don't believe the 4.5s need be considered any differently.

Jaguar do compression tests on their notorious "Nicasil" lined V8's and this is the only accurate way of gauging bore wear at least...

My 4.5, bought from 'Slackalice', is on 47K & hasn't use a drop. That said, I use it daily, so that'll probably change in the future.

Hi ya Paul, it's sitting outside the GF's house. Still needs running in, the 3 mile drive to work wont do it any good, so I'm just using it for the longer trips. Think I've put about 300 miles on it so far, feels good though smile
It's noisy, bangy, Purple's turn for the Ring this year smile
