Ooooooooo me nipples
Discussion
Just had the most interesting 6 hours whilst trying to fit a set of braided brake hoses to the AP calipers.
The O/S front flexi had been chaffing on the upper wishbone due to not being tied back...It was due an MOT and would fail so needed doing.
Decided that the best route for this one as the original part is or can be £40 was to recommend a set of braided which the customer agreed with. They come in cheaper for a set of 4....excellent quality and improve the brake performance no end.
Came to fit them only to discover the O/S outer bleed nipple has been sheared and the inner has been stuck on with sealer!!!
The N/S outer is showing signs of heat treatment where someone has tried to free it and the inner was nailed in with locktight.
Im guessing the Main dealer who last did a 12000 mile service which includes a brake fluid change had a little difficulty!!!!! And rather than address the problem allowed it to go out without a brake fluid change and in a poor condition. The car was bought last year and the service was carried out then..
As the customer is on a very strict budget 2 new AP calipers are a mear dream. so I set to task and began drilling and tapping the calipers, which was nice...The one with the locktight was an absolute Freak to do...Eventually got there, the brakes would now put you through the windscreen, not that your supposed to use that pedal anyway.
When the Cerb first came out, part of the 4.2 service when changing the brake fluid was to remove the nipples and copper slip the treads...ho hum

Seems to be a commen occurence these days with the AP callipers. When it happened to me, the guys at Pirtek sorted me out with some supposedly stronger steel nipples. Migth be worth anyone doing a fluid change to change the nipples at the same time, just to reduce the chances of snapped nipples next time round.
