My starter motor died at the weekend Various checks were done and its definitely the unit so I need to replace it.

The question is can I do it without removing the fuel rail?

If not how does the fuel rail come off and is it relatively easy to do?

cheers

Jes,

It's easy.

I'll shoot you an email directly.

Have you sourced a starter?

The fuel rail is easy to remove but the starter motor will squeeze up between the header tank and the intake(just).

Not easy first time round but after about 50 they are done in 40 mins....Be careful not to loose the starter bolts through the bell housing opening.

Dont forget to disconnect the battery!!!!

What is it with starters at the moment?

Mine has started (no pun intended ;-)) playing up. On saturday I was left standed in Tesco car park because the starter just decided to click and not turn the engine over. After a helpful soul gave me a shove I drove home, parked up and tried restarting it. Worked fine. Worked fine again this morning, but I have had it occasionally before when it's hot...

I would allow at least an 90 mins to get it out, as a first timer. Make sure that you have plenty of WD40 for the bolts, give them a good squirt a day or so before you attempt it and again before you get your tools out.

Good advice, but be careful not to get any through the hole and onto the clutch.

really easy

disconnect the battery

disconnect the throttle rod

take off the fuel rails - they just unbolt and lift off - just push them forward a bit,

undo the bolts holding the started motor down, lift it up and disconnect the cables and then wiggle it up through the gap.

Fitting is the reverse.

I did it so many times last Oct that I can now change one in about 20 minutes!
