Now further to my original thread about buying a Cerbera, and the blast in Ian's car which was really loud (in a good way of course) but there is no way I could fire one like that (de-cat + sports exhaust) up at half six in the morning to go to work. Just how much louder is a de-catted car with a sports exhaust over a standard exhaust, with cats?

Mine already had a sports exhaust when I bought it but when I decatted it I don't think it made it much louder, perhaps more raspy/not as deep. I've heard standard exhausts and they aren't quiet, compared to a normal car, but are fairly well muffled. I personally think they are a beautiful sound, and as long as you don't rev it hard coming out of the drive no one would complain (no one has with mine).

Pretty much spot on. I don't think it's too loud but my wife does. However, expect major sh*t with the neighbours if you fire it up early and get home late. My neighbours don't like mine so I'm careful about when I get it in and out of the garage.I think the easiest way to say this is it depends on the car. Testing on mine, removing the cats added 9-10db.
But there's options. Around 105-108db at 4-4500 revs isn't too noisy - think a standard car of about 8-10 years ago, and there's plenty of exhaust systems/variations that will achieve around there.

I've just tested mine as I'm booked into a Castle Combe track day next month.
The following figures were taken with the draconian spec' as required by Combe. i.e. 4500 rpm, 500 mm and 45*
With cats replaced with cherry bombs and a full bespoke stainless 2.5" sports system: 103dB
As above but with, ACT slip on silencers, (converted to bolt on on my car): 98dB
Combe require a car to be 100dB or less to get on track!

Sports exhaust & linked de-cats
111 dBA @ 900 rpm
127+dBA @ 4500 rpm
Standard back box & linked de-cats
95 dBA @ 900 rpm
110dBA @ 4500 rpm
I feel like I have nutered the dragon
No you havent, you've given it back the missing 6hp, and the new sound will grow on you.111 dBA @ 900 rpm

Does anyone on here run with a standard exhaust and cats on? as the current figures you are giving me mean I won't be able to have a Cerbera because it is far too loud to fire up early on a morning when I go to work. I love the sound but I doubt the neighbours will share my enthusiasm for it. If the cat's with a standard exhaust and cats bring it below 80db (low rev range say below 2k rpm) I might (just) be able to get away with it.

AS mentioned db levels are measured at typically 4500 rpm which is a lot louder than start up if you are sensible. My 4.5 with linked de-cats and sports box was measured at 108 db at 4500 rpm but is relatively quiet (compared to other 4.5's) on start up/tickover. Removing my cats only noticeably increased the db level over 3000 rpm.Matt

Go and find the right car and buy the neighbours some earplugs for Christmas...

Or like at the Brighton Speed Trials the other weekend...."road car? OK, give it a blip"
"Yeah, that'll do"

Nope - you won't have a problem. I had the most annoying neighbours possible backing onto my driveway who complained about anything. They never complained about the TVR and to be honest they are reasonable quiet if you just potter out.Matt

But then you shouldn't be giving it any until it warms up anyway

Well it's good to hear, my main concern was the rev blip as the V8 clears it's throat on start-up
, now all I have to do is work out my finances to make sure I can afford the servicing + tyres + tax costs etc, averaged out it doesn't seem much worse than an M3 (I haven't looked at insurance yet) even doing 10k miles per year especially when you consider an M3 will be £460 to tax in 2010 and the Cerb will be £200
plus the obvious contingency fund (needed for both cars) encase anything major goes pop.
I'll keep you all posted, I really hope I can afford it, as I want this car (head rules over heart when it comes to money sadly).
