After eliminating the PAS pump and air con pump (hard to track the noise as it only does it from cold so ltd window of opportunity) it looks like I have an issue with either the rear crank bearing or front gearbox bearing (spiggot I guess?). The gearbox is coming out to finally nail the culprit! Assuming, as the bottom end was swapped out with a latter 4.2 (to avoid crank problems!) it may be the crank bearing, with the gearbox out is there any way to do the rear crank bearing in situ?

Cheers

Hi Smash
Dont know if this helps but I am aware that only the gearbox needs to come out to change the crank oil seal - whether this is the case for the bearing I'm not sure.

Im sure someone more knowledgable than me will be along soon

I'm not familiar with the ajp but usually you would drop the sump, remove the bearing cap and then poke the upper bearing out of it's housing with something blunt. It will only push out in one direction due to the bearing locating tags. Rear crank seal and spigot shouldn't be to difficult. Use grease to remove the old spigot if it's stuck.
