I just saw steam peeing out around the expansion bottle. I switched off and checked it out. Engine seemed very hot, though rads not as hot. Started her back up and drove home. No more steam though guage was all over the place (up to 100-100 then back down to 80....etc.etc.)

D'you reckon its a airlock? (Never had this before in 6 years of Cerbing)

Sounds very much like an airlock.

I would go for an airlock too, might be worth changing the expansion tank cap in case it has started to fail.

I had this, it was lack of water. There was water in the bottom of the expansion tank, it filled up when hot but I still managed to get 6 litres in when it cooled down. I now top it up once a month.

Thanks chaps

I am too embarrassed to tell you that I have not checked the level for quite a while (I do of course check oil every week though)

Just lost 1 litre into the exp bottle. I will buy a load of coolant and fill fully and bleed tomorrow. Hoefully all will be ok. It'll be a great excuse for a long test drive tomorrow (with water rations of course)

Be aware that even with the system empty, you will still see a small amount of water in the expansion tank ! can be very misleading. The level should be right up to the seam/joint on the tank.
