My handbrake has never been the best but it now seems to have given up completely, totally loose as if the cable has snapped. Any advice as where to look first? From under the car or can the centre console be removed to have a look from the top?

Thanks.

First of all check each rear hub where the cable goes into the back of the hub, it should be tight. Then from under the car, along the transmission tunnel on the drivers side, just in front of the Diff, the cable goes into a bracket where it can be adjusted. It should also be nice and tight in here.
The Brake shoes can be adjusted/tightened on each hub. Remove the wheels and you'll see a small hole down in the 6 o'clock position, look in with a torch and you will see the adjusting nut, use a flat blade screwdriver to tighten it up until the wheel begins to bind.
If you need to replace the brake shoes they are from an early 90's Peugoet 604 (Check the equivalent parts list forst in case I'm wrong)

Thanks Jensen, sorted, well for now anyway, adjusted the plastic nuts infront of the diff as it was very slack there, and now seems to work. Cheers

New shoes and proper adjustment do actually make it work properly.

Mine will even hold on a hill now.

It hardly even held on the flat when I got it.
