Hi

Sorry to slightly hijack this topic!

Started fitting a new/replacment starter a couple of weeks ago, finished it today.
Pressed the button and the same problem, starter goes but doesn't seam to engage with engine!
Battery is fully charged, less than a year old as well!

Any ideas!!!!

Just a click could be solenoid.

Replacement OE Tilton solenoids from US for around £30.00.

Worth a punt - cheaper than a new starter.

Hi,

jsut a few days ago I had the same probleme with my Cerb. I thought it is the startermotor because the batterie was only 1 year old and fully charged (I thought). I tried to start the car with jumpleads and it stared fine. It was the battrie!!. i put a new one and the car is fine.

Check the battrie first before you change the startermotor.

Cheers for the replies, well i happened again today and it did not start then it did not even click?
Phoned the AA who came out and had a look and checked the battery which was fine then he tried to find the starter motor where is it?
Then we tried bump starting it (didn't get on to well) then as i was going to upgrade and pay a £50 on the day fee pressed the button and fired straight upbanghead. At this point he turned and said "that sounds the tits" (he had never been to fix one before)

I upgraded to home relay and took out there £500 cover thing so who else has this and does it cover the starter? I know i should have asked but forgot.

Hi,

I think the problem is your batterie.

It is not easy to check the batterie. my normal Charger showed me that the batterie was full but it was not. I´m not an electrican but if the car starts with jumpleads 99% shure that it is the batterie. Even if your batterie is almost new.

Take the batterie out and bring it to a store where they sell batteries. They have the equipment to check the batterie and they will tell you if your batterie is ok. or not.

This is much cheaper and much less work than a change of the startermotor.

Sorry for my bad english but I´m a German TVR Driver.

I'm reading this thread with interest now as my starter has started to make a horrible noise and sounds like it's on the way out.

Great ..... NOT.

I would also replace the battery cable to the starter solenoid, this costs a few quid in parts if you put it together yourself ( you'll need a blowlamp) may a big difference to my starting as the old one was quite crispy.

Oh the starter is located on top of the gearbox in line with the vee of the engine. its all quite accessible if you remove the plastic scuttle / battery cover and intake first.

Regarding the £500 repair thing from AA, yes it covers the starter, but only kicks in after 14 days...you get a booklet and it sows what is covered and its basically everything apart from consumables, eg. discs, pads etc.

Hi mate, nice to see the yellow beast on Saturday, sorry to just 'appear' though, I have a habbit of sneaking up on TVR owners and introducing myself laugh

As it happens, I had the Cerb out yesterday, took her down to Snetterton to watch the old man on a track day, she started first time in the garage, as she was fairly warm I guess, but after being sat in the cold at Snetterton (and after a 1 hour run on decent roads) the starter just 'whizzed' by a few times before catching and starting.

Is it possible the cold doesn't help? My battery did drain a month back after I left the lights on, so that might be a problem, but i'd have thought a good run would have charged it up again.

Also - I've got the warranty too, and I'm sure it covers the starter, but as said, only after 14 days.

Cheers
DB

Hi dirty boy, nice to meet you to. The car would not have been that cold because the first time i had only stopped for petrol after about 20 mins drive i thought it could be the other way round because it started fine in the mornings?
