hi guys im going to take the car off the road for a few days to do the valve clearences and a few other things but while im at it i want to check /adjust the cam timming. but as far as i can see theres no marks in the cam verniers etc. and also no refrence to what it should be in the workshop manual. is there a guide on hear some where or any one no anything about it
All the experts seem to be off line.
So hope this is as I remember it.
Advice has been to set cam timing to equal overlap at TDC.
That is on the exhaust stroke as the piston touches TDC and the exhaust valve closes and the inlet opens and they should be the same height. Or open equally.
I also remember the exhausts should be given and extra 2 thou to make them 12 thou.
"They only ever close up" was the comment.

Right then, work on each bank seperately. Set either the front or rear cylinder to TDC - easiest way is to use a TDC tool / piston stop. Again, working on either the front or rear cylinder, set the cam timing to equal lift on overlap as mentioned. I have a few pics that might be of use;

Have a look round the album, most pics have some text explaining what is going on. I put a timing wheel on the crank pulley as well as an improvised pointer which worked well and means its an easy job in future, but others have managed without doing this. Be careful not to drop the sprocket bolts down the timing cover else thats engine out time!
