I needed these a year ago, spoke to castle race engines, where jamie was developing performance ones, but at that stage not out yet, the garage sourced them from tvr power. along with the followers/buckets, you're looking at £1300...

I also spoke to kent cams at the time, who said theyd do pretty much whatever you want, but id have to send the originals in, and wait, i think the cost would have been about the same from that route if i remember

Would have thought Piper can offer the same service?

well to cut a long story short a friend of mine uses a process which included cnc matchines and all sorts of other things to mod cam shafts for extreme race aplications.

i have just discovered that one of mine is shot in a big way!!

now rather than spending the best part of 800-900 just in bits im willing to let him have a go at reprofiling the old one. what have i got to lose?

it would be helpful if i could at least give him the orrignal profile specs.

Not that I know much about reprofiling, but surely with the lobes worn, there isn't the actual meat left to reprofile it to the desired lift?

i did say this to them but was told that using cnc milling and welding or somthing he could make them to any profile i wanted.

but im no expert on the subject.

yes, this is what kent cams also said was possible if I remember. as long as there are some good lobes, cant they use the profile on those.

I spoke to piper also, who offered the same kind of thing as kent.

all sounds very possible so well worth a go. If you do get stuck though have a word with Newman cams, they did all the original cam work for TVR and have 4 or 5 different profiles on file to choose from. They aren't cheap but they're from new blanks so will be a very good cam.

If you decide to go for Kent or Piper Cams, and need an original cam to copy I have Clatter cams and later cams.

Piper cams are in Ashford and Kent cams are in Folkstone, so both are on my doorstep.

The clatter cams give the same power as the later cams . I put the clatter cams in mine thinking they would be more powerful despite being told otherwise . I was wrong , the only difference is increased noise and valve train wear , David

I'm interested in this as my 4.2 clatter cams are worn and I have been putting off buying replacements as £1200 is a chunky amount of money. If anyone can re-profile or produce replacements for less than I'm a customer!

On the point about power, my understanding is that the lift and duration on the clatter cams is somewhat different from the later whisper cams. This would have an effect on the power delivery (not max power) as the increased lift and duration on the clatters cams will position the max power higher up the rev range and decrease the low end torque compared to the later whisper cams. Anyone care to comment?

I have a pair of these on the bench at the moment, and the wear on them doesn`t seem to bad, I can suply some measurements if you want.

If there is no power gains over the later cams, then why were clatter cams used in the Tuscan challenge cars?.

I've seen a LOT of cerbs on the dyno and from my experience i can say that I have seen no difference in hp either peak or delivery between any of the cam profiles, except for some very very last of line 4.5 cerbs which mysteriously seem 20 or so bhp down on what you would expect. Certainly between clatter cam and 99% of the rest of the cerb profile cams there is nothing to pick between them in pure hp terms from what I have seen.

What was the supposed benifits of them then?.
