I am about to replace my steering rack outright, which leaves me a leaky but working steering rack that is an easy recon. My idea is that for an agreed fee between us eg £150? we can pass our steering racks between us and vow to pass on the rack you take out for the same money. I noticed some companys are asking over a grand for an exchange rack which is silly money. What do you boys think?

sounds like a decent idea, a bit like the idea of a communal set of cats, for MOT time.

I'll certainly be willing/looking to join such a scheme in a couple of months. Don't think mine is even leaking, but Fenhurst commented that it's a little hard to turn, so I'd like to recon mine anyway.

Have you tried Power Steering Services in Greenwich? They overhauled my steering rack of my old Cerbera for £150 all in.

Yes, but it means the rack is out of the car, and you have to wait for it to come back etc, etc. Whereas if we have the communial rack it doesnt cost you any more as you pass your old rack on eventually. Just convenience.

Is anyone interested in this idea?

I'll need to get my rack done soon and might be able to get hold of a second hand rack.

I will add that when i refurbed some of the black boxes i offered cash back on return of the old unit, only a few times did i get an old one back to repair and have sitting on the shelf ready for the next needy owner.

Hence i ran out and gave up.

What happens when you get a rack that can't be refurbed?

Or some unscrupulous git doesn't pass it on.... ;-)
