Anyone Got A Spare Windows/Door Lock Control Box?
Discussion
Took my car to see Joolz at Track Car Solutions the other day and was amazed at how friendly and helpful he was! Its rare that people take the time to be so helpful these days. (Thanks again Joolz!) Anyway we proved that my Door Lock/Windows Control Box is faulty and although he is assisting me in getting it repaired i am still after another if i can get hold of one ASAP so i can get in and out of my car. So if anyone has one knocking about that they want to sell or short term loan me until i get mine back it would be VERY much appreciated! We could do with a communal set of these boxes in circulation for fault finding purposes. (just a thought)
As mentioned in my other post i have now purchased a new control box. But i still cant get my windows to work at all? Also the boot solenoid still will not operate either? in fact the only thing that dose work is the door solenoids. When i press the door button nothing happens for a couple of seconds like it would if it was waiting for the window to go down and then the door pops open. If i press any of the windows up down buttons or the boot button i can now hear a relay in the control box operate but nothing happens. I have checked all the fuses i can see and tested all the positives going into the box and also all the negatives and everything seems to be in order. Any suggestions would be very welcome at this point as I'm running out of ideas and i can feel this getting even more expensive! I'm actually starting to suspect my replacement box, but it dose just seem like a fuse has blown? Has anyone had anything similar?
Hi,
Testing the solenoids is a good idea but presumably Joolz at Track Car Solutions would have tested these to confirm the box itself was at fault.
You need to be really careful when trying to solve door/window problems. The problem is that these control units usually die because something else in the wiring has gone amiss. If you just buy a new working box and plug it in without first verifying that the problem which fried you first box has been resolved then you just end up frying the new one too. This process can get very expensive at £160+ a test not to mention how rare these control units are.
That is also why in my opinion a communal set of these boxes in circulation for fault finding purposes would not be in circulation for very long. Somebodies box dies, borrows communal box, that goes pop too, yep - they have a fault.
I have had the same problems as you have and was advised not to plug in a new box until I could confirm that all the other connected motors, switches etc were OK. Not being very electrically/mechanically minded I ended up spending nearly three weekends with wiring diagrams and multi meters before replacing a suspect boot solenoid. Connected my new box and all was well.
I have made a number of posts in this area as I spent a long time fully understanding it. The info you need to test your circuits is posted here:

Good luck - I know how frustraiting and expensive these issues can be.
Tim.

Well after hours and hours of testing each and every fuse a few times and all wires to the control box i've finally sorted it today! In the end it turned out to be a simple bad connection/connections on the plugs going into the door lock/windows control box. I'm kicking myself for not checking this first but to be honest it all looked perfectly fine! It was only when i had a friend to press the windows buttons while i tested the outputs that it came apparant. However the boot will still not open but it is putting power to the solenoid which i have removed and proved to be faulty. (just how many faults can a car have at once? Lol!) So..... Do you have a maplins part/order number?
Went to my local Maplin store yesterday morning and picked one up. I didn't expect it to be such an exact match! It is the identical item! So i was all back up and running by dinner time. I even went to work in it today!
So many many thanks for that info Cerby54 and to everyone else that's given me help and advice on this problem. Without you all it could have been a very expensive exercise! Now to find out whats causing my MIL light to come on and also to replace the wiper park sensor. Oh the joys of TVR ownership! Funny how non of it mattered after i got in it and took it for good a drive.
