Decat and sports pipes!!!
Discussion
Oh my god it's loud!!!!
Just decatted to get rid of a rattle which was thought to be collapsed cats but half way through the job i found that one of my cats didn't actually have bolts holding it on one side (hence the rattle). I figured that seeing as I was almost there I would carry on and see how loud it is.
Result, not too bad but thats just round town. Need to try it on the motorway to see if it's bearable.
It is quite raspy though and even though the burble is still there I'm not sure if it sounds more V8 or lax power drainpipe style..

Cheers for that, Andy. Any chance you could let us know what it's like after you've had it out on the open road, and how bad it is with the windows up/down? Thanks again... -J
Mine is decatted and with sports pipes and it's no
problem around town or out on the motorways.
Did 140 miles today combining both scenarios and all
that bothered me was some new airflow noise...
must look into that.
Go create some weather...

Just bringing this back up in case anyone is interested on my thoughts after living with this for a couple of weeks.
After about 400 miles or so, I'm going to keep the decat and sports on. Why, I don't know, it's just raw and a car like the cerb is a raw car imo. It's quite quiet until about 1500rpm then it just lets loose.
It's not too loud, the better half actually thinks it's quieter than with the cats (might be due to the fact that half my exhaust was hanging off previously)
Conversation is possible through the country and on the motorway. I don't know if thats good or bad though, depends on the passenger
If you're not sure about it just give them a go or listen to someone with them, they definately scare the old ladies in the yorkshire villages.

Does decatting a 4.2 without swopping to a sports exhaust make much difference in sound and performance?
The sound will be alot smoother than a sports exhaust sound IMHO (I dont like that though, again, my opinion) and it will be a bit louder - not much louder though, bareably louder. You can expect to see blue-ish flames out the back when it pops and bangs (well, everyone behind the car should if you are really going for it!)
The performance should stay more or less the same AFAIK, if any difference is there it will only be the weight loss of getting rid of the cats. I could be wrong, there might be a slight increase. There isnt any power difference with a decat and sports exhaust because IIRC the back pressure is the limiting factor???
Not 100% on this, its only what I remember. We have a "quiet" sports exhaust which was fitted because the standard stainless item had rusted through at a join
Only one regret about going the sports exhaust route is not going for one sooner
