Your about to get a million different opinions biggrin Unless you already have a personal preference, Go with what the Guy from Opie advised - he's independent.

^^ no good for a new build yet to run in. steer clear of synthetics .. run it in on a mineral oil. 5w-40 is good .. thin enough to get round quickly from a cold start which is good.

Mine's had 15 50 all through it's s/history (although i'm not sure what was put in on the last service, no note)

Seems to run okay, although it's apparently a bit sticky?

so for an oil change with no rebuild etc, just go for something from 5w50 to 15w50 mineral oil. or is 5w50 too thin for a non rebuilt engine.

is the halfords motorsport 5w50 oil anygood, ive read a few people use it on here, would that be ok to use on a refill.

I dont know what was used on it before as this is it's 1st service with me and theres nothing documented in the history. 4.2

No mineral oil ONLY for running in mileage, after that it's synthetic all the way - yes I use halfords 5/50, heard it was the old Mobil 1 mix and I am happy with it for topping up purposes.

Agreed

I'm planning on using running in oil (non synthetic) and very cheap .. with a change at 75 miles and another at 1000 (still running in oil) and probably switch to Steve Pro S at 2000 miles ..

Here are some good guides that I've found to running in - both do not advocate just taking it easy..

After the post running in oil change the car was still munching through Shell Helix 5w somthing at quite a rate. On the reccomendation of Opie/Austec/Steve T I swapped to the Silkolene and the oil hasnt moved off the full mark in 1000 miles. Quite something for me smile

With the meagre oil useage now maybe I needn't have bought quite so much paperbag

When I fitted my race engine in my old car, I was advised to run it at 2k revs for 20 mins, checking for leaks, then take it out on the road at 60-75% throttle. Then change the oil
