How to make a ajp 4.2 sound more throaty?
Discussion
So, I am looking for a S6 and my first test drive was in a 4.2 (standard)at Racing Green this morning.....
My first surprise was the 4 cilinder sound the engine made which I am not sure I like, but I will have more test drives so it might grow on me.
More of a disappointment though was the actual sound of the engine at idle and low rpms, not so much its 4 cilinder alikeness, but the quietness and lack of "burble" or low down sound.
Yes a sports exhaust will make the engine more noticable, but is there a way to add some "bass" without the noise becoming too loud and obnocious?
thx

Cams, exhausts, timing, cats, etc etc all have an effect on the sound, so I expect it's difficult to change one thing to get that bass, remember, given the nature of the cams on the AJP, it's going to sound lumpy and uninspiring at low rpm anyway. My first surprise was the 4 cilinder sound the engine made which I am not sure I like, but I will have more test drives so it might grow on me.

My sports exhaust makes it borderline antisocial when it's idling on the drive, and has a deeper sound to some cerbs i've heard, but I have a sports exhaust.
I was tempted to de-cat, but i'm not too sure if it'd be too loud?
Personally, during normal driving, you can't beat the Chimaeras/Griffs, but under hard load, the AJP screams at you, and it's cloud 9 material.
I have a sports exhaust and straight through pipes
.
It's loud.
More like a WWII fighter - even on tickover. It really does roar. I love it. But there are a few who think it's too loud
.
Thinking of a quieter combination in the near future to allow some trackdays without silencers.
Happy to do you a fly past if you want a comparison

Love the sound of my Cerb, but they are a flat plane crank so you won't ever get the traditional V8 a la the Rovers. Exhaust's make all the difference, I see you are in Surrey so if you want to have a listen to mine with an SP system then shout... or will be up at the Ace meet later if tonight is an option.

OTish, Nix you still up for that as well, I should be there no later than 7ish, hope to catch you there.

I hate missing out on these Ace Cafe meets living so far away from London etc.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Must try and get a local meet going on - perhaps the McDonalds car park at Beccles or something?
Here is a short snippet of my 4.2, sports exhaust (unknown make) and decats

Turfclub - I know the way to find out about the Cerb is to ask questions, but this is about the 15th topic you have started in a month, making out you are interested in a Cerbera, but you obviously you know Feck all about them because you keep asking riduculous stupid questions. If your interested in a Cerb. keep it to one topic, and if your genuine you will get all the help you need, otherwise stop winding us up, and go for a drive in one of your nice civilised Porsche's.

Must admit I am starting to feel the same way...how much do you need to know and what are you comparing the cerb with...SP6 this, SP6 that and then all of a sudden the V8 that wasnt on your shopping list..but it sounds dissappointing!Whilst generally people on here will be as helpful as they can the questions you are asking are very subjective and down to personal preference - the only way you will decide is go see, test drive and make your own mind up I'm afraid. With specialist cars such as these (and others) you should be prepared to travel and be dissapointed until one day....you will not be disspointed and you will stumble accross your dream!

Bit harsh I think.BUT
It might be best keeping it all on one topic.
Whoa, what's up with you guy's?
Aren't those comments a bit uncalled for? Though this was a community to ask these questions, in fact there are a lot of posts in which my kind of activity is ecouraged.
I am just someone who likes to learn as much as possible about something I am interested in. Especially when it comes to something like a TVR, so that I make an educated choice, knowingly and willingly and do not become a resentfull owner bashing the name and this model.
I will continue asking whatever questions I have. Maybe its best, if you find that irritating, that you do not read them nor reply. I hope there will be others which are a bit more openminded

This looks like a good buy in my book - engine rebuild and a comprehensive service prior to that. Have someone look at the chassis, if that's in good condition could be a winner? Needs some nice anthacite spiders to complete the look.

Otherwise, all the ones costing over £20k on autotrader are nice examples.

Weibe....what's your intended budget for your Cerbera?
10-15k, but flexible (both ways). I by know have read so many comments that even a low mileage 20+k car may give you the same grief as a 10k 98/99, in fact I have been told that a high mileage car may actually be my best bet in terms of reliability and servicing costs, which means that even sub 10k should be considered. On the other hand, paying a bit more for one if it ticks all the boxes is also possible.I will test drive another 4.2 tomorrow and than S6's next week for comparison.
cheers

This is the First Topic you started on 14th Dec
'Best All Round Cerb?'
I am contemplating entering the Cerbera arena and am wondering what model would be best for me. First of all I am not a track day fan, nor will I go for top speed on a high way, I am much more into using my satnav to lead me through the country side. (Not only to bring me back home but also to look ahead and see whats beyond the next turn). I would also be using it for bringing kids to school when I so feel like it, the occasional supermarket trip etc.....
...And you want a Cerbera?????

Its just that some of your question are a bit 'opened ended'. Which is the best allround Cerb...? Does anyone have power curves...? Which is the best - SP6, 4.2, 4.5...
These are all subjective and whilst each owner will tell you what they know or feel how can that relate to your expectations or asperations...? How many owners have owned all 3 and are able to compare objectively? You seem to have some nice cars or car (911..?) so you must be aware how objective other peoples comments can be. You really need to get out there and try the different cars - you will probably answer your own questions.
Would also be a good idea to attend a local meet - pistonheads or TVRCC? The ownwers will be far more likely to let you pour over their cars and may even take you for a spin. Bad time of year for good attendances though.
Theres alaways the pistonheads search facility (whens its working).
Good luck.
Wiebe
Make sure you ask if the rebuild was standard or not.
Austec are well known for "Adding! a bit if asked too!
Although I do not understand why so many people are selling up at the bottom of the market.
Perhaps moving into "down turn" Porches and Aston Martins?

Some of the above comments may have given the wrong idea: I find using a satnav in my porsche is a VERY effective way to be able to drive more spirited if you will: You see what is coming up, how much space you have etc.. In fact even on highways at high speeds a satnav can be a life saver in terms of upcoming twists and turns... That I do not do track days is a consequence of how much time I have and priorities....
Okay, lets take a step back. I have always been interested in tvr's, but for a lot of reasons it never came true. In the past a 2 seater TVR would have worked, but now, with 3 kids at home that is a no go. The only way I can rationalise the purchase of a TVR now is to have one which will seat all of them if necesary.
Most of my starting comments were based on what I had read in this forum and what it made me expect of the cars, granted if I had test driven a couple before I started posting it would have focused my posts more, having said that reading and talking about all this is part of the fun, why do all o you meet up in bars etc and hang out in this forum after all?
Would it not be possible that I could enjoy a cerb as much as the next guy but for different reasons? The 4.2 I tested this morning was very easy to drive and I had no problem imagining me bringing my kids to school in it (if I could find the child seats to match). At the same time I also drove it over back road lanes in 2nd and 3rd gear which find more exhilirating than just stepping on it on the highway. If it is the optimal driving style to get the most out of what a cerb has to offer, no it probably is not, but than again who actually does drive any performance car to its limits? In fact I would think that the ones who do on the open road are a risk.....
I will report back when I have a better idea what I like best: S6 or V8
cheers
