We're contemplating buying a Cerbera and are looking for some help/info/opinion on red rose cars.

What's the best guess as to how many Factory Red Rose cars were made?

Are the differences really significant/noticeable in the real world?

What premium (if any) would you expect to pay over a standard 4.5?

Thanks,

Simon

I always was under the impression there was little real difference with the RR cars...in fact isn't there some debate over what actually went into the RR cars some are significantly different?

The factory Build Sheet specifications for my 4.5 LW Red Rose (08/11/01) read:

'Lightweight body as per press car'

'Red Rose Upgrade : -
Raised compression ratio
3-angle valve seats
Re-worked and polished ports
Balanced combustion chambers
Optimised cam timing
Re-shimmed cam followers
New high performance head gaskets
ECU EPROM chips
ECU 95/97 octane switch'

With Joolz short induction kit and remap it makes TVR's claimed output.

Or by a standard 4.5 & get Dom at Power or one of the other builders to do a Red Rose conversion smile

To be honest, if there is any real world difference between a RR and a remapped 4.5, it's less than the driver's! IMHO

Thanks for the replies. Been doing a little more digging and from what I can tell it seems that RR came in from 02 on, so I guess that's why there are so few of them around.

Getting a stock 4.5 converted is about £4k from Power so that helps determine the "cost" although "value" may be different depending on people's view of authenticity. Have always noticed that this tends to be worth more to the seller than the buyer wink

Got mine done (RR conversion and remap) at Austec - will be able to tell you the difference in about... oooh... 150 more miles. Finish running in and then get the remap.

She already sounds quite different!

Not strictly true. The first 2 done by the factory were Christof's and Martin Redwood's (Beaver) which were registered in 2001 nerd

yes they do sound different, indeed even better, I don't know what part of the change makes the note different but it certainly is. 150 miles eh, I'm sure you could rack that up on an extended journey to Austec hehe. Looking forward to the results thumbup

I currently own the press car, so does that mean the RR was a retro fit on my car? I had always assumed that it was fitted from day 1

2001 not 2002.

I agree as has been mentioned they do sound different to a normal 4.5, god knows why but they do.

...and I love mine.

I heard, that when TVR were building the engines, the units that produced the claimed BHP figures (or very close to it) were put to once side. For no reason at all these engines just pop up fro time to time, and were a good few horses up on the majority of the engines that were used. Presumeably some were put together bang on tolerance, and all the components just happened to balance up perfectly.
So the units that were put aside were given Red Rose status, and sold as an upgrade.

We purchased ours from new in May 2002 but the factory said there were eight already built by then.

At the Yorkshire cerbera meeting a few yeatrs back we lined 10 of them up together.

I think the last 10 cerberas built were supposed to be red rose spec

I have not seen a factory built one for sale

We drove a large number of 4.5s before deciding to buy new and the RR is quicker.

Top speed is a little bit south of the figure in the article but we were fully loaded with all of our Le Mans camping gear between Alencon and Le Mans but still achieved something with an 8 in the middle of the number (on the clock)

Hope you find one
