Cerbera Speaker/Stereo upgrades?
Discussion
Evening all, What have you done to upgrade your stereos? Fair enough there probably not on very often, I never had a stereo in my R33GTR as I loved the straight 6 roar, but I fancy having something nice in the Cerbera?
I've bought an Alpine CD/Radio in dash motorised screen but I want to upgrade the speakers too. The rears are 4" aren't they? Is it worth binning the front 6x9 and adding proper 6" door speakers?
Anyone got any pics of what they've done?
Cheers

Steve_T is your man for this (assuming you are looking for quality sound as opposed to 'Kwalitee bass'
)
I'd say Carl Baker is your man
)
but you're very welcome to listen to mine and see if it's what you're after. The current Baker reference standard is 6's in the front, 4s in the back and a pair of twin woofers, also 6" in the helmet hole. These are driven by the head unit only (because the speakers have sufficient sensitivity to make this possible) and the sound quality is excellent. The setup can't quite live with the old girl on maximum attack, but then not much can as well you know!

I built a bass unit utilizing a high end 8" sub and it adds real depth, many people comment on how good it sounds. If you try and put a sub in the helmet holder alone it flaps helplessly around and sounds rubbish. The bass unit i used is built to work in a 12" cube square, so perfect for the application.

From what I remember of talking to Carl, because fibreglass is accoustically dead you need different strategies for getting the sound you want compared to a metal bodied motor. I'd doubt that a sub would get the volume of air it needed to work in the helmet hole. The woofers don't extend the frequency range, just fill it in at the bottom end, so they work just fine in the helmet hole. I use the Cerb a lot for big euro trips, so I wouldn't want to give up the boot space for a sub enclosure. Others have different preferences - like Mad "Mind Your Base Bins" Mark.

Another vote for Carl Baker - He really knows his stuff, the accostics in a Fibreglass car are totally different from a metal bodied car, and its worth speaking to him before you start splashing out money. He set up my system by junking the front speakers and replacing with Infinity speakers and 2 tweeters, and an infinity crossover. Excellent sound.

Mine doesn't. Mines a tight fit and sounds good. I made an enclosure that slides in. Managed to get enough 'volume' for the enclosure, to make the sub work at its optimum performance.Pic of mine on my profile. The facia was made by me using some leather similar to the interior.

alpine motorised tv screen?
I have a pioneer screen and i though of putting in the cerb but i thought the screen wouldn't be able to fold out properly due to the overhang on the top of the dash above the DIN slot.
i have the speakers out of the rear of my cerb but i forgot to measure them what size are they?
has anyone put any speakers in the front door cards bar the tweeters.

I'm just about to take things a little further and get some proper amplification into the mix. Carl and I spoke a couple of years ago about what could be done to take things to the next level should I ever want to. The recommendation was for Sinfoni amplifiers, which are made in Italy. Interestingly enough (to me at least) he said that amps have a sweet spot in their output range of ~50-65% of their max, so going for a massive amp with loads of headroom isn't always the best choice if you're not going to crank it up enough. I've discovered that Sinfoni are not sold here anymore so have taken a bit of a punt on Ebay with a couple of purchases from Italy. As always if anyone wants a listen once things are completed you'll be most welcome.
Steve.
P.S. Cad I missed your last reply. I will have a dig through the paperwork and see if I can find out what I paid, failing that I'll get a current price from Carl when I next speak to him re. the above and mail it to you.
