ive undone all the bolts and the washer/nuts on the bottom of the cover where the engine mount brackets sit on, a/c compressor is off, rocker covers are off.

bottom pulley is off, tensioner is off, oil filler neck is off and oil breather is off.

the cover slightly comes apart from the block but it just doesn't want to pop off. i can't see how the cover comes off as the bottom pulley/crank shaft has a larger ring on the outside of the case which wont allow the cover to slide off/over.

what am i missing? Any help is appreciated

The woodruff key is still in the crank, it prevents the cover from fully coming off unless you tapit out of the groove in the crank. iirc.

what pulley do you mean?

i have taken the a/c compressor off along with its base plate which had two horizontal bolts going through to the chain cover and 2 vertical sunken bolts holding the base plate in

ive removed the bottom pulley, which was bit of a struggle ot get off, but now there is a larger ring on the crank which is behind the mounting ring for the bottom pulley. it has 2 alen key bolts in it with a sort of metal retaining ring.

will i be able to see this woodruff key with the cover in place? i guess i will have to rotate the crank to see it as sods law its probably on the underneath as we speak.

the pulley I was refering to is the one on the crank that drives the air con, this is bolted to a steel sleeve which slides over the front of the crank, mine was held on by a grubscrew in the side, just behind the front face, and also this has a keyway in so that it rotates with the crank, this has to be removed first to remove the timing cover.
if you are still stuck I can put up a pic when I get home tonight.

no i understand you now clive. i call that pulley the bottom pulley, when you said a/c pulley i thought you meant the top pulley on the a/c compressor.

i will search for grubscrews and woodruf keys tonight and tap them out. hopefully it will be a winer.

I had no joy with removing the bottom pulley flange tonight in order to get my timing casing off. I found where a grub screw should be but there isn't one there. are these flanges/sleeves pressed on? should I use a hub puller on it? am I missing somthing? really need to get this off as its holding me up bigtime

heres some pictures to help

From memory that thing just slides of the end of the crank - take the large bolt out, and try gently tapping/wiggling it off - use some wd40 if need be. It's pretty much an interference fit though, so it might be difficult to get it to start sliding.

ETA Yes - a hub puller would work well!

Sorry to butt in.
Just spent the last few days removing my friends ajp8 from his cerb, and am now in the proccess of stripping the engine for a rebuild.
Haven't worked on the AJP8 before, but am enjoying and learning alot so far.

Have removed the bottom pulley(For the a/c belt) and also removed the steel sleeve that this pulley bolts to. Upon trying to now remove the chain cover, it steel feels like something is holding it on around the pulley area. I dont want to force it off without knowing abit more about it.

Cheers

If you've got the bottom pulley, woodruff key etc off, then it's probably just the timing chain tensioner sticking a bit on the chain.

make sure you have the timing tensioner bolt removed. make sure all the bolts around the whole of the cover are removed including washers.

make sure the woodruff key is out from where the pulley sleeve went. then tap it side to side with a ruber mallet and it will soon break free and slide off.

Cheers for the advice. The tensioner is free from the chain
The chain cover slides off until it is almost off(Free of everything apart from the crankshaft cylinder that passes through the chain cover), but then doesn't seem to want to come off anymore - and i dont want to force it. Where i removed the pulley flange (The cylinder which the pulley bolts to with the 4 m8's or similar), there is a square shape piece(Which the pulley flange lines up with) on the inner cylinder that is passing through the chain cover. Do i have to remove this cylinder also? The petruding square on the outer perimiter of the inner cylinder seems to be preventing the chain cover from sliding right off? Looking inside the inner cylinder there is a 10mm hex bolt inside right at the bottom - Should i undo this to remove the cylinder from the crank shaft?

Hope ive explained myself clearly enough, ive nearly confused myself :-)

im lost from that description.

basically the pulley bolts onto the crank via a sleeve. you need to undo the 4 allen headed bolts and the large centre bolt and remove the pulley.

then you will see a circular flange with 4 holes on the outside perimiter and a large threaded hole in the middle. this is the sleeve that needs to come off.

mine didnt have anything clamping it onto the crank only the woodruff key. i had to buy a hub pullers and remove the sleeve that way. i took the woodruff key out and then the cover slide off easily.

if you have a hex bolt or grub screw holding the sleve/cylinder onto the crank shaft then you will need to undo that and then pull the sleeve out. they can be really stiff and may require a hub pullers.
