Engine removal tidy up/ engine bay tidy up
Discussion
Ive removed my engine from the cerb for the basic reason I wanted to check it over for oil leaks, renew gaskets, gerneral clean and repaint parts.
I also want to get to the clutch master cylinder/wiper motor and anything else lurking under the heat shielding.
I noticed that most of the heat shielding is rivetted in?
do people drill the rivets out and how do they re-sucre them? do you re-rivet them back on or are there other better methods.
some of the foil on the heat shielding around the bulkhead/exhaust tunnel etc has ripped or is peeling off or is a discouloured gold from heat transfer. what have people done to make this look fresher? can you get/ or could you use adhesive sheets of thick heatproof foil?
what paint is best to use on engines, especially the timing chain cover/ inlet manifolds and fuel rail etc.
I was thinking of using halfords extreme heat paint, in gloss black, and possibly try some Gunk engine lacquer over the top to give a bit more of a shine and protect it. or hammerite engine and use high heat paint for the rest. any advice is welcome as i dont want to paint it and the stuff melt/drip off after a few hot runs

Yes, drill the rivets out. Then rivet back in I guess. I have removed mine from the engine bay, and bought new stuff. I assume riveting back in is the way to go.
As far as timing chain cover, etc. Powder coating seems to be the most favoured choice, and its what I'll be doing once I get round to starting on the engine.
The block itself, how bout the same stuff as that guy used in the recent thread.... trawl back a few pages and you'll find it. His engine was colour coded black and gold, and looked superb.

Caduceus, where did you buy your new heat sheilding stuff from ? is it in sheet form that you cut or is it already in the shape you need?
I got the thermal barrier sheet, thermo sleeve and thermo flex from GPR Motorsport. You have to cut it to shape.http://www.gprdirect.com/OnlineShop/Summary.do?c=1...
Good luck with the TC cover. I have to do that too soon, so let me know how it goes

No problem in drilling out rivets, just make sure there is nothing behind the heat shield/fibre glass!!(like an a/c pipe). You can always use a slightly bigger drill bit to remove the rivet and head eg 3mm, and then use a bigger rivet and "o" washer. Looking at what your doing though, makes me think you have 99.9% more engineering knowledge than me, so keep up the good work and get plenty of pics up.
