If the 4.2 has the dipstick located at the back of the engine, does this mean it is the earlier type with the crappy crank?

Yes it's an earlier one, but probably , by this time, crank issues resolved. It was a rouge batch, not them all, but all tarred with same brush.

I only ask because mine's a late '98, but with the dipstick at the back. I thought they were fitted with the later 4.2 by then?

Mine is a 97 on its original engine with the oil dip stick at the rear and rising in the center at the back of the engine.

I didn't realise there were 2 different 4.2 engines and whats this talk about clatter cams? Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to what the differences are? I assume it is better to have the later variety but beside a mysterious oil leak I will cover in a different thread my engine seems to run very nicely.. not too slow either!

Ben

Wasn't the dip stick located at the rear if you had Air Con?

Mine is a very early 4.2 with a/c. Dipstick at front but I think it had a full rebuild probably around 2000.

Mines a 97 4.2 with a/c and a front mounted dipstick, on looking through some old invoices i had with the car i found one dated sept 98 for a '4.5 dipstick mod'. If this could be done on its own, the dipstick position may not be good way of telling which crank you've got?

Seeing as I've managed to break two sumps smile .....

My old 4.2's got the rear mounted dipstick & has a sump that is peculiar to the mounting position of said dipstick.

FWIW I found taking oil readings off the rear dipstick a lot easier, as the oil tends to drain down.

On the 4.5 with the front mount, the stick would need to be removed for a few hours to get an accurate reading.

For those of you with the rear mounted..... Have you ever tried to replace the stick in the dark ? biggrin

Just realised I was being an idiot, my dipstick is at the rear. The oil filler cap is at the front! silly Not that it really matters....

I normally check my oil when the car is in my garage, and I have to use a torch to find where the dipstick goes!!

...maybe it just depending on which way the engine was facing when it came down the production line....

For general info - mines a 9.8 4.2 - it has air con and the dip stick is a the rear.
