The engine mounts are suffering from surface rust and I think the only satisfactory way to deal with them would be to remove them. However I dont want to take the engine out. Can I just put a jack under the sump, let that take the strain and then remove the engine mounts?

All I wanted to do this winter was strip the wishbones and put new bushes in! But every time I take one bit off there are three other bits behind it begging to be made shiny again, what I have I got myself into!?

Yes you can just jack it up and remove the mounts. I did it last year when I was 'just doing the wishbones' smile
The 2 bolts that go through the chassis rail could be an absolute pig to get out. Needed lots of persuasion.

I took the plates that bolt to the engine off as well. But I think there would be enough clearance to get the mounts off the rails with them still in place.

Thats great, thanks for that.

I have removed the steering rack and there is a fair bit of surface rust underneath it. Also there are lots of little patches of surface rust dotted about everywhere but I have come to the conclusion that I am going to admit defeat with them and wait until next year when I will pay someone to do a full body off restoration. It will take an age for me to patch up all the little bits individually and it wont be a proper job.
