I have a 4.5 cerby and when I come off the throttle the revs are sticking for a few 10ths of a second, the car wanting to go whe I don't (a little hairy at times). The local dealer replaced the throttle cable and is suggesting other stuff, anyone have an idea (or experience) of the what's happening.

Put two throttle return springs on.

When I looked back in the history of my 4.2 I found it was going through a throttle cable every 9-10k miles so it was rubbing on something to wear through the strands of cable. Maybe on yours, despite having the cable replaced it could be getting stuck in a groove it has already worn. Increasing the strength of the return spring may stop it getting stuck but it wouldn't stop wear. It could still be some other problem. If you operate the throttle linkage at the back of the engine does everything move smoothly there. Is something potentially obstructing the return or maybe the pivot bushes on the controls are sticking. I'm only guessing but I imagine it is a quite simple thing.

When the dealer fitted the new cable they fitted a stronger spring with no difference, they have advised me they think the next step is to strip the throttles down and take the spindle off the car to clean everything up which is pretty labour intensive. I am not that competent mechanicly and prety much rely on a mechanic knowing his stuff/ I can trust, but I am just a little concerned that I may pay for work that does not fix the problem, do you think this proposed work seems like the next sensible course of action

ajp70, taking your advice about the pivot bushes, and as I am an absolute beginner with cerb mechanicals where are these located, in fact any info about cerb fueling from anyone would be helpful.

My reply can only suggest possible reasons because my mechanical knowledge is limited. Best wait to see if some experienced person will post their actual solution to the problem. Sorry I'm not more help than that.

Is your mechanic a general mechanic or tvr? there's a few things which can cause this effect like air leaks, spiking throttle pot signals adding fuel and advance, physical cable issues as mentioned above .. difficult to diagnose stuff like that over the net though.

Thanks for your input, the lads looking at my car are TVR main dealer mechanics and if they not sure after working on the car i'm sure its a bit of a strange one to call. However any other suggestions or tips certainly welcome.
