My enigine is out of the car and I want to check valve clearances.

unfortunatley I have lost the timing so I cannot rotate the crank/cams to check clearances.

I have removed the cams now, and pulled one bucket off with the shim.

Can I measure the shims to match them up to "a set thickness" if there is one?

Or can I only tell wear and closing gaps by measuring clearance between the cam lobes and buckets.

Unfortunately No - you have to measure the clearance between the cam and bucket, and then fit the correct shims accordingly.

ok, I thought that might have been the case.

I will have to time it back up, put the cams back on and then measure.

cheers for the info Jensen

cheque will be with you soon too. posted yesterday but did it with work, so by the time it goes through admin and down to royal mail collection it most probably went out this morning.
