I've just picked up a set of really nice RL7's which happen to have a great set of S02's on - except for one front which has had the inside edge taken out. I've got an S03 I could put on but just wondered if anyone had a spare S02 knocking about with some tread on - 235/40/17.

It just seems a shame to take off a decent set of tyres for the sake of one - especially when they seem to wear out so quicklyangel

If they're SO2s then they've been around a bit, and as such may not be in as good a state as they visually appear.

Do consider that just because there's loads of tread on them they may be harder than stone, and such offer very little grip.

Just my 2 penneth.

Yeah, I take your point, it just seems "wrong" to chuck a set of tyres which look fine without at least trying them! They've been dry stored off the car so may be OK.

Make sure it's not false economy, it'll cost a lot more to fix your car, or yourself, if you don't have traction when you need it. And you are putting them on a 400 bhp car!

Just be careful.

Jim

check the numbers on the tyre wall that follow the word DOT ie DOT 3104.
This is the date of manufacture, in this case 31st week of 2004.

DOT 217 = 21st week of 1997 First two numbers are always the week.

If over 7 years old DUMP them!

Hope this helps?

S0-2's even of an eight year old vintage are awesome.. we had some on the front of the Cerb at Brands - and the grip was suspension failingly good still! thumbup

Yep - that's what I'd read and why I'm not keen to dump them without good reason.

If I can't find another S02 do you suppose an S03 on one (front) corner would be close enough to be safe? - I've already got one which would suit.

No, S0-3's are awful. (we've run them on the rears recently too)

If you get absolutely stuck, I'll have a word with dad and see if we have one single S-02 front. I think we have, the other of the pair was ruined on the drive back from brands due to the amount of camber we were running as a result of the wishbone failure. I'll have a look on monday - I am working tomorrow unfortunately.

Whereabouts are you based?

It all depends on how they have been used or abused.
Do you know their history Jim?
Interestingly that tyres in use last longer than those in storage!

Taken from here http://www.tyres-online.co.uk/techinfo/tyreageing....

"However, Bridgestone's website points out that many tyre companies, including Bridgestone, offer manufacturing warranties on tyres for 5 years from the date of manufacture, which has resulted in many vehicle manufacturers advising against the use of tyres that are more than six years old",

If your happy they are sound and usable it's your decision.

On my sons Kart, 1 year old Bridgestone's and we dumped them.
They get so hard it takes ages and a hot track to get them "moving", Dunlop's were much better but more expensive!

They've been dry stored, off the car with air in them. There is no sign of any deterioration and the rubber is still soft with no sign of aging.

I'm not simply trying to save a few quid by running "part-worns" I bought the wheels and the tyres just happened to be on there. It just seems to make no sense throwing away three tyres which appear to be perfectly good, especially when they have such a good reputation as the S02's.

V - ours were abused (former record holding sprint Cerbera owners tyres), then dry stored for about six years after that - and put straight back onto our car. They were amazingly good considering, far superior to the S0-3's we had on briefly. smile

itie - its dark now, so I'll check tomorrow. I'll let you know if we have it.. we're in Birmingham as I think you know? so not tooo far... that said, we're often travelling around to various sprints and such. thumbup

Fantastic, cheers.

I can come up to Birmingham, but out of interest do you ever get to Shelseley Walsh - I'm a member there and it'd be great to see your car in action.

Yep, definately going to have to have a look around yours, I really fancy a crack in mine this year, though the two kids (and third enroute) are going to make a full season a bit of a struggle!
