bks! I know I've read about this somewhere before but can I find it now on the search?!

I have a fantastic hot air supply but the cold is athsmatic as they come - the solenoid and flap in the alloy box seems free and easy and working well so I guess it's the fan that's a bit blocked. I'm sure I saw something about leaves blocking the intake but not sure how you access it - seems to be in the inner wing. Do I rip (sorry - carefully remove) the carpet to get access?

Is my brain making all this up?!!

Thanks for advice (even if it is just to say my brain's had it!)

Access to the fan is from inside the Driver side Front wheel arch. Remove the front wheel, and you'll see the cover, held in place in true TVR fashion by some self tappers and silicone sealant.

Access to the hot air fan is via the passenger footwell, I assumed the cold air was via the driver footwell. I seem to recall different body shell designs with different fan access. Then again I might be dreaming.

The intake for each fan is below the indicator and the inner wing used as a duct, normally its very efficient so much so most owners go in behind the headlamp cover and block up the gap a little bit.

Yep, sure does keep your feet warm!

Not tried the half tennis ball trick yet, just a bit of rag stuffed in mine!

Don't forget there was a TVR official mod to the hot side, where they blocked it off completely in the thin section of the inner wing, and cut a hole into the inner-wing inside the passenger foot well.
This stopped the cold air feed to the heater matrix and made the hot air recycle from the cabin only.

If I switch the two fans on and off alternately I can hear the flap move can you hear yours move?

Mine has had this factory 'Mod' done. So with the Hot air blower on, the cabin just mists up! Just like having the 'Re-circ' button (that lots of Jap cars have) pressed on.

Thanks for replies!

the flap is working freely on the alloy box under dash (mine's early cerb).

So where am I best looking for blockages - where the fan is? As I say the hot side powers out plenty of air flow but the cold side you can barely feel by the vent - I have A/C if that makes any difference?

Yes the hot air heater mod does mist things up, but with the window open a touch it's not too bad?
Or both fans on to dilute with nice damp cold outside air! smile
You just got to love TVR's to put up with them!

SMASH - at the bottom of the wing on the drivers side where that fan is located there are some drain holes.
The air-con should drain condensate from here I believe.
Make sure the holes are clear, as I have heard that the wing can fill with water!! yikes

My cold air flow also seems to fluctuate, and I am almost certain the fan slows down after it has been running for a while. Not much help but a possibility to eliminate.

when using mine, sometime the coldair would blow sometimes it wouldnt.

and it was the same with the hot air. but when the hot air would blow the fan made a wierd noise, like it a high pitch scream, ive pulled the hot air box out of the passenger side foot well opened it up and it was clean. i hokked it up to 12v and it blew silently and strong. i havent a clue why it made the noise unless one of the heater hoses has a gap and its whislteing out of there.

my next job is to open the cold air box. so is this in the drivers side footwell or is it in the front drivers wing?

Discovered over the weekend that I do not have an inspection plate in the front inner arch - do I get into the fan through the cabin then?

Oh yes you do. Look harder! hehe It's how you change indicator and headlight bulbs if nothing else.

  • smacks forehead* Yes - good point - I wasn't looking that way, lol! !! I meant the one Jensen stuck a pic of (which has disappeared now as if to make me look a complete idiot!) in the footwell end.

ive looked at mine and cant find the cold air fan. the only hatches in the drivers side arch are the 1 for headlight bulb changing which is round and the rectangular one for a/c and indicator bulb changing.

ive had a good look in them both and cant see what should resemble a fan/blower box.

and ive looked on the rear of the front wheel arch and i cant see any hatches there. if there is one is extremley flush and stealthly hidden.

any ideas.

To get access to the Hot Air fan, I think you remove the carpet covered panel in the passenger footwell - the one that covers the ECU. Just lift the floor carpet, and tug it out.

Detailed instructions for getting to the hot blower are about halfway down this thread

ETA I dont have the panel in the back of the drivers side wheel arch either.

I only get hot air from the dash vents to the windscreen. Is that correct?

No!

I get hot air from all the vents, if only the hot fan is on!
(1997 build date - line of small hole along top of dash)
