Clacking noise from rear offside wheel
Discussion
Has anybody else had a problem with a clacking noise from the rear offside? I am convinced it is the disc running slightly out of true and throwing the pad(s) back against the caliper. I took the caliper off and noticed that the inboard pad used to have a rubber backing which had worn away. The metal backing is green. The outboard pad looks okay the rubber is intact. As a temporary measure I have coated the bare metal of the inboard pad with copperslip to try and quieten it down. But that doesn't last long it it works at all and the noise is really starting to irritate me now. By the way the noise is allied to road speed. The faster I go the faster the clack.
It is probably the brake pad moving in the calliper, a cure for this is to take the pads out and clean them, then add some silicon sealant to the back of the pad, put the pads back in the calliper press the brake pedal and leave to dry.
It is a common thing on Cerbera's and can be very annoying.

Seconded. This will be the likely cause. It is a common thing on Cerbera's and can be very annoying.

Does it stop if you gently apply the brakes?
Do you have the springs fitted to the pad pins?
There were no springs present. Only the two pins that go throught the caliper and pads. Where can I get the springs if they are required?Do you have the springs fitted to the pad pins?
edited to answer question 1. The noise does stop when you apply the brakes but not if you apply them gently, you have to brake quite firmly.

New springs MAY not cure the problem altogther though

Only last Saturday had my rear disk off to clean out the hand brake.
My pads are quite tight in the claipers and stiff to move.
Yep, if they stop rattling when the brakes are applied that's them rattling.
I had similar problem on my Range Rover, I ended up "peening" the trailing side to widen the backing plate to cure it.
if you have weights on the wheel check they are stck down well.
my mrs car had a realy annoying clacking noise that repeated faster with speed. i thought it was the pads on the rear, i stripped the callipers down and put new pads in with anti vibrate spings etc, checked the tyre valve wasnt loose or clanging against the rim or road checked the tyre wall wasnt scrubbing against arch liner, checked the tyre for stones stuck in the tread or a screw nail in the tyre, or stone guard on back of dics wasnt vibrating. i couldnt figure it out until i grabbed the wheel and heard a clank, investigated and could see that the weight was loose and moving up and down on the wheel lip with centrifugal force (the faster we drove, the louder the noise and mre repetative it became).
it ended up being a loose wight clipped on to the back of the wheel lip. a bit of super glue sorted that out and it never ticked clanged and made a horrendous noise again
