Having had all my shoes and discs apart yesterday to clean and adjust, today I was under the car lubricating the cables and tightening the handbrake when I found that there are 2 holes ont eh bottom of the lever.

My cable was attached the to hole closest to the pivot and thus would have been exerting less force on the cable.

Has anyone else found this?

I'm since moved mine to the lower hole.

I think you will find the closer the cable is to the pivot the more leverage you get, but you get less movement.

By coincidence I took my drums/disks off last week, as when I applied the handbrake the car sort of bounced and I could rock it backwards and forwards with a sort of clunk!

I could not find anything loose and tried to adjust the hand brake on the shoe adjusters.

Anybody else had this?

The shoes can actually move quite a lot within the confines of their pins and the top stops etc.

The more that your drums and shoes are worn the more they will be able to move as the gap at the top increases.

I thought that's what it was!

I managed to improve it by taking up the adjusters a bit.
Holds OK.

But the whole hand brake design leaves a lot to be desired?
Innovative but just needs a back plate to keep it all clean and dry!

Yep, the rear plate simply needed a small lip to deflect the crap getting in and it would have been loads better.
