Is the little silver key in the right position?
Mine did this too - I am just struggling to remember what we did - I didn't have a new starter motor I know that.... Sorry - I am racking my brains..... 
Okay got it!
It was the battery. I couldn't believe it cos' everything else worked fine - i.e. it primed etc., clock still running blah blah blah... Tried jumps leads from a new battery (to save the hassle of changing the battery just to check) no change. So then we thought it wasn't the battery.Another friend then suggested that it would be better to jump it from another running car - which we did. At first, nothing. But after running the other car wired up to mine for around 10 mins - the Cerbera started, but it took the other car revving at the same time to get enough power through.
New battery - no problem

The battery could be the problem. If not then i will put money on it being the solinoid on the starter. I had to change this on mine, if you struggle to get one let me know as i have a source for them. I was told initialy that they were not available and you had to get a complete new starter. Not so, £30 later and all was sorted and has been fine for the last 2 years.
Your symptems were exactly the same as mine.

Hay McNasty, i dont thing that its the relay as I can hear that clicking when I press the starter, praying its just the battery, if not, how hard is a starter change?Your symptems were exactly the same as mine.

Were you listening to the radio when cleaning? Had a similar thing here, spent an age cleaning and polishing with the radio playing. I assume the amp draws a reasonable current because after three hours all I got from the starter was a click. Charged the battery and away it went, two years later still fine, still on same battery and starter though the car needs cleaning now.

Looks like it was the battery, got myself one of those booster packs for jumping cars and she started 1st time, went for a drive to put some power in it and stopped at the shops, same fault trying to restart and my booster pack was flat my then! So will have to go back in a but when its charged and try again, will whip the battery out and leave on charge over night as its been sat all winter with only a few good runs so probably asking a bit much of it! If the battery is shot, what's the battery type for a halfords one?
It's a Halfords type 072, but you may have a job getting one since they do not make them any more, at least not the same size. You may end up going for a Red Top or an Odyssey PC 1230. I put an Odyssey in mine it is slightly smaller than a Halfords 072, and slips in a piece of cake, but it has twice the cranking power, which starts the car a treat.
Well after all that I borrowed a batt of a mate that was fully charged and all good, went back to her and fitted it (much to peoples amusement in the car park!) went to start...........
Just a click..... So after all that the starter is fooked! But there is a very nice silver lining in that I have that breakdown repair thing with the AA so the car is being towed to a garage and a nice new shiny starter motor fitted in the morning, so not all bad!

Just as a thought - are you turning the immobiliser off with the key fob?
A couple of times I've parked my car and it wouldn't start, but did when I turned the imobiliser off with the tag in the slot method. Something was interfering with the radio signal to the immobiliser.
Fisrt time was understandable (under the power cables/pylons at Quarry corner, castle coombe) but the second time was outside a pub!

I left the door open on my car while working on it on friday night, went to it last night and noticed the interia light on and thought bugger. Jumped in, turned the key and every thing clicked and primed as it should but nothing when trying to start, 3 hours with the charger on and it burst into life, worth a try before you start messing with the starter.
