Cheap Insurance for Trevor
Discussion
Just got the insurance renewed for Trev. 627 squid from Tesco
. 28 years old, 5 years no claims. tried all the usual TVR suspects with no joy.
As a side note, does everyone know that the Motor Legal Protection optional cover that costs you 20 quid is a complete waist of money. If your 'fully comp' (which i assume you all are) it buys you absolutely nothing. What a scam!!!!

Have you actually renewed with them, or just got a quote?
I fell out with Tesco when I tried to insure the Scoob. Following a tip-off, at the quote stage I repeatedly asked them if I needed a tracking device (which I didn't have) and they said no. When I phoned back to confirm (as I'd found nowhere cheaper) and take out the policy, they said "can we have details of your tracking device?". I referred them to the previous conversation, but they were adamant they couldn't insure me without a tracking device. It left me about two days to sort out alternative cover

Well done Jamster. I put a thread on here a couple of days ago which nobody has picked up. Be carefull with cheap insurances if you have a prang the insurance company will send your pride and joy to some firm who probably has no experience with specialist cars and you have no choice in the matter. Thats bodywork and mechanics. You can bet its about money and they will cut many corners. Would you ever trust it again let alone track days
I'm a bit concerned by the tracker fiasco.
I've just been quoted £650 fully comp, by Tesco, on a 97 4.2. (26, 8 years no claims, no points, garaged in Harrogate) They absolutely blew everyone else out of the water. No mention of a tracker though. That could scupper the lot.
By the way, How much would a tracker be? Bearing in mind Tesco were about half the price of any one else, could still be worth it?

My wife had to have one fitted on her car to get insurance (Direct Line). As far as I remember it was about £450 for the device to be fitted and then about £100 per year subscription.
Strangely, Direct Line didn't ask for one on my Cerbera (and quoted me about £550 - 39 with 7 years no claims). May come down to value as there seems to be a 30K watershed with many insurance companies which the Cerb falls under but my wife's car was over.

How did you manage that, I'm 28 and live straight down the A61 in Moortown but other than that everything else is the same and Tesco want double that for my insurance.
I've recently come off a ban, so registered & insured the car in my 63 year old dad's name. He lives in the local Bronx & I paid for him, £486 with tesco, the NCD protection was another £97.65 & £37.80 for breakdown recovery. I applied on line & can't recall the tracking device question.
I'm driving third party only (king carefully !)

I've been with Tesco's for 3 years now. The first two years was on my MG ZS 180. They didn't ask for a tracker back then and at the renewal didn't ask for one either but......just before the renewal came through I got a "new quote" from the Tesco;s website and it asked for a tracker!!
It would seem if you are already insured with them they don't need a tracker at renewal.
My Cerbie didn't need a tracker either on phone call to change the policy or using the website "new quote" option.
Insurance Co's.......world of their own!!

When you send it off to be repaired you don't have to use the insurer's "approved repairer". You can get it repaired at a place of your choosing. Of course, there is the danger that you may have to pay for it first then claim it back off the insurer.
I hope your right, i was only quoting BBC Watchdog program the firm in question was Directline. The owner had a choice of there approved repairers only.
Right! been on the phone to tesco and they have assured me that no tracker is required. She said they have a pop up menu which indicates what cars need trackers and what dont. I asked her to note the tracker not being required in my file.
Might as well cancel my subscription to NavTrack then? Cant c any other reason to have it live? What do you guys think?

Going back a bit, not sure how I managed that quote but I'm certainly not complaining!!
As for them all being the same company, I tried Direct Line and they wanted nearer a grand?!
I never have and never will understand insurance companies/quotes, I'm paying less for the Cerb than for the Fiat Coupe I've just chopped in!
I reckon it's all based on a complex formula using your telephone number and last saturdays lottery numbers!
