When putting the clutch plates/assembly back onto the flywheel, assuming the plates are the right way round, does it matter what position the clutch goes back in? ie - if it came off with, say a mark at 12 o'clock in the assy, but when you put it back on, the mark is at 3'o clock. Does it matter which position, as far as rotation goes, it goes back on?

I only ask as I did'nt make a mark on the front of the clutch assy, and a mark on the flywheel, before I took it off to check wear, etc. Maybe it does'nt matter, but I need to know, just incase.

Cheers
Cad

In theory the clutch is positioned to give the best balance, a bit like when fitting a tyre onto a rim. However, I seriously doubt that the TVR factory bothered with this aspect - I put mine back on in a random position and its been fine.

no it shouldn`t matter which way on it goes, I take it you are concerned about it being balanced when its running, it would be nice to put it back the same way that it came off, for piece of mind, but it won`t make any difference at all IMHO.

Thanks chaps.
Just needed a couple more opinions to be confident before bolting it all back together.

Ok, so I've tried slide the gearbox back in, and it stops about half and inch short of going in all the way.
Is this the clutch plates not fully compressed, and the sleeve around the g/box shaft hitting it when it goes in? Meaning the slave has to be pressurised to get it all the way in? If so, then how do people get the box bolted onto the engine when its out of the car? Or something else?

it sounds like its not ligned up correctly, the front of the gearbox shaft not fitting home into the end of the crank.

I've always found it a right bd getting the last bit of the gearbox into the bell-housing. The problem I always had was getting the tip of the input shaft into the very tightly fitting spigot bearing. No real solution other than just perseverance I'm afraid.

Sorted. I took out the clutch and realigned. Then slotted it in all the way eventually.
Thanks guys.
