Ok...how do you replace the gearbox oil?

I can see and get to the drain plug but what appears to be the fill plug (same as drain - round plug with square inset) seems impossible to get to? Access is blocked by the drivers side exhaust?

Is this the filling plug? If so, does the exhaust have to come off to get to it!

or..

is there another way for filling the gearbox?

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, that is the filler plug! I had to use a small socket set wrench with a 3/8" drive with the head over at 90 degrees. It is just about slim enough to fit in there. To refill I had to use one of those oil 'suction' syringes with a 12" pipe on it.

Not an easy task to put the filler plug back in either, when trying to get the thread with oil running down your arm! I may have been doing it wrong but I got there in the end!

i used a piece of hose pipe run out of the filler hole and half way up the door. i had the mrs fill the funnel and i made sure the oil gravity fell into the box. when it dripped out i pulled the hose and put the plug in.

it is awkward to get to but it can be done, i used the right plug socket for the plug and a spanner which slid betwen the exhaust and the box.

Get a drill pump and a length of garden hose for about a fiver, makes filling a doddle.

The best way of refilling gear box or diff oil is to use one of these Oil Safe pump kits:

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-6530-pump-standard.asp...

Store the oil in the drum and its there when you need it. Has a long flexi hose with a 'hook' nozzle on the end to pop into the filler.

I've used them for several years on the race cars and would never use anything else now. They aren't cheap but they are very good and last for ever
