ah - alot then, but if I had a real nice Cerb and that kind of cash I'd go for the Dry sumpeed AJP (for a tad more on the plumbing for this). A hell of alot lighter if you could stretch to the uprated T5 internals as well.

Close call but it woul have to handle a tad better.

I like both.

What about a Melling rebuild on a 4.5 race engine? Does he re-use much?

Why do this when you could get APM to build an engine?

Mine is cetainly making more power than these new melling engines.

Ah I'm sure I won't, just curious. Has anyone actually seen any figures from a new engine? APM does look good for an engine though when I need one... How much did you pay for yours out of interest? (PM or txt me smile)

Doubt he want to dirty his hands with old lumps!

When you are talking anout the last 10-15bhp it really is down to the rollers - I'm sure melling race spec lump will (In Reality make more than the Dry sumpers that the factory turned out in the late 90's).

I heard back in the day they were making 450-460 - but now you here that this figure were more likely slightly inflated (and more like 430) mind even 20 - 30bhp is almost splitting hairs (not quite).

I'm sure Mike said his race engine was dyno'd at 400bhp at the wheels, or around 480bhp flyweel. I'm sure its a 4.7 special by APM - dry sumped etc etc. That's a phenominal output really - over 100bhp/litre!!!

Despite being an engineer I still can't get my head around how you can open out the 4.5 liners reliably using magical 'bike technology' - oval pistons and liners perhaps? hehe

I want 100bhp/litre from my next lump (but this is near the limits of what is possible for a 2v engine can make on a sensible budget). Mind my race 4 banger make over about 96bhp/ltr (and that is not even crossflow, so I can believe that - just).

Mike who?

Think the limit is Nascar 2v lumps. About 6.2 making just north of 850bhp (137bhp/ltr!!).

I would be very very suprised if many of them broke the 400bhp barrier. wink

I wouldn't go that far - they had race cams and much higher compression + better induction over a road cars 370ish bhp and a good exhaust I'd think they had about 420 - 430 back in the day (the race one), not Wheeler obviously - his was bigger (as he could do what he wanted when it was his series). Mind you a bit like today (drop anything you like in the racers and opop on all types of Daft Halfords add-ons.

The race lumps seem to be making between 410 and 420 from what i have heard. Doubt they were ever much more than that. Dont forget the factory ecu was very limiting on the race engines.
