AA just been round and told me my alternator has gone. Can anyone tell me where I can get it done. I would like to take it to an independant garage as dealers are way too expensive. I live near Watford.

Also, is it a big job?

He put the charger to the battery and said the reading was at 12(whatever that is) and if the alternator was working it would be 14. We had it running but once the car was switched off it wouldn't start again.

Excuse my total lack of knowledge. I know

between the alternator and the battery terminal the cable goes through a fuse link (100 amp curent capacity ) .. this is notorious for fracturing giving no charging to the battery. It's possible of course that your alternator is faulty, but much much more likely to be this common fuse problem.

the fuse is located on the rear of the two ignition coils, you have to remove the rearmost purple inlet hose to see it properly. Hopefully it's an easy, quick and cheap fix.

Many owners ask for these to be changed at every major service, it's cheap insurance against this sort of thing happening ..

best wishes

To check alternator put one lead of a voltmeter on the main supply cable on the Alternator and put theother one on a good earth ( engine is good )

You should get approx 14v, if you only get 13v or less or 15v or more its naff
