Smoke and Whine

After a totally unsuccessful day trying to fit my replacement speakers to the cerb and trying to get the golf started, I decided to go for a blast.
Now, my Cerb has always been a bit smoky at high revs and I did a bit of experimenting today to see what exactly happens.
Once I go above 6000 revs, the left hand exhaust starts to smoke and the left hand side of the engine seems to take on a supercharger type whine.
Could this be a leaking exhaust manifold? It might drop in power at the same time, but i'm at the point where power is starting to drop anyway, so I could be imagining that.
In the past history of the car I have a receipt for a replacement 'b' cam, now extrapolating from my minimal knowledge, i'd hazard a guess that the 'b' cam is on the right hand side of the engine and that side was rebuilt, but the 'a' side wasn't and is due a rebuild.
It's just a bit strange having a smoky left hand exhaust and an accompanying whine from the engine at high revs...

Just the slight problem of my cerb being my only working car at the moment, so dropping it off to be looked at makes getting to a work a little difficult...
Are Offords any good for Cerbs? I see that they can give you a loan car.
I'd prefer to take it to Joospeed, Topcats or Austec, but I don't think any of those guys provide loan cars do they?

...but the money you save on the bill would pay for a hire car for three years!! .. remember: "cost" and "price" aren't the same thing!! ...

It's not the money it's the hassle! How would I get home after dropping the car off at your place?
I'm working in Derby 4 days a week after xmas, so it may well be easier then.
Ah well, good news and bad news...
The smoke at high revs shouldn't be anything to worry about, according to topcats, but they are going to check over the car anyway.
Had to call the rac last night though as it started to run like a dog in the car park. The engine itself seems ok, no misfiring and runs smooth on a trailing throttle, but at idle or under any acceleration it's really resonant and rattly. To me it seems like an exhaust problem but I'm sure the garage guys will know the score.
Just hope it's not too expensive!

Neil, I picked my car up from Topcats this morning. Warren mentioned there was another Cerbera coming in today with a similar problem to mine - in that it had smoke from the exhausts at high revs...
I hope yours is a different problem to mine, as mine was down to worn pistons and rings, all 8 needed replacing - basically a rebuild.. The guys at Topcats really know their stuff, kept me informed all the way etc. The car is running like a dream now
, just need to run it in and I'll get an ever bigger

Same problem I think, but Warren said that it can be cured by a rebuild, but it isn't doing any damage and isn't sapping any power.
I can handle a bit of smoke as long as I know the car isn't going to die on me. The rebuild can wait until the after xmas
That's assuming I don't have bigger problems!
More news...
Firstly, I'm very impressed with the TopCats guys at the moment, although I haven't got the car back yet
The resonance was due to a broken engine mount.
It appears that a certain company that recently went under, weren't exactly truthful in the final invoices they sent out. It looks like the oil hasn't been changed for a while, the spark plugs were the wrong type and there were a lot of problems that shouldn't have been missed if the car had been serviced within the past 2000 miles, as stated in the book and history.
Not much I can do about that now, but at least it's being sorted properly.
The oil pressure spring was soft and needed replacing, my shocks were dreadful (which I knew already) so I'm taking the opportunity to have a set of nitrons fitted
and a few other things have been done (tracking, oil change, plugs etc...)
The bad news is one of the valves is 20% down, meaning a broken valve spring. Usually a full engine out job? TC are going to try to fashion a tool to change the spring in situ, otherwise it might as well be an engine rebuild after xmas considering the time and labour costs it will take to change the spring the engine out way.
Estimate so far including Nitrons and valve spring changed in situ = £2000
