After fitting a red top battery I regularly get a coffee grinder noise when starting the engine, when starting again its gone and the engine fires up. I understand this has to do with the battery giving too much power and the starter engine not being able to engage quickly enough. Does anybody know a fix for this?

thx

sounds like the clutch in the starter gear assembly is dodgy

Sounds to me more like the solenoid isn't bringing the pinion into mesh quickly enough, consider cleaning / regreasing the solenoid. The battery 'giving too much power' (I interpret this as so much current that it spins the starter up before it has fully engaged) doesn't sound very likely to me.

The grinding noise on mine was due to a different reason. The bolts holding the started on had stripped and the pinion was jumping off the ring gear as it engaged. I'd suggest taking a look asap because it will eventually let you down.

Hi

In my case it was the starter ring gear turning on the flywheel!

So, what seemed to be the problem was that the teeth of the starter engine and the flywheel were to tight together: With the red top battery the starterengine was engaging quicker which: with the tight allowance for play this meant that the starter engine sprocket was moving too fast to always engage the first time. A shimmy was put inbetween, raising the allowance and presto: engagement every time...

....... duhhh started from cold this afternoon, coffee grinder again.....

damn, maybe I should go to yellow top
