My steering rack has been giving me grief for some time. Changes PS pump to no avail and ended up putting old one back

Just before going to Chatsworth it was getting tight in one direction. I had flushed the system and bled on 2 or 3 occasions, and it was getting worse.

Decided to drain the header down and replace with Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak as a last resort, hoping the run up to the Peaks would be enough to cure. It was still positively dangerous. The steering wheel would not straighten of it's own accord, I had to forcibly drive with both hands at all times.

Seemed slightly better on return journey, and by the time I got home it was a pleasure to drive again. Jacked it up and forced steering lock to lock quickly again again at the wheels (faster action than doing it at the steering wheel. It's now sweet as a nut, so rack rebuild has been put on hold once more.

The fluid supposedly softens the seals and cleans the piston bore, and for me it worked. Will probably revert to traditional fluid when next I flush out but Lucas claim it is OK to use neat.

If anyone has similar issue it is worth a try. Think it was £12 or so on e-bay

if you have to end up changing the rack try Power Steering Services (greenwich), they will refurb yours for £130 + vat. have you checked the uj's as they can get covered in crap, give them a good clean up and then apply plenty of grease.

I noticed when test driving mine that where the uj goes into the rack I had a leak from there that was saturating the lower/thicker chassis tube.

I planned on testing a bottle of this stuff to see if it "does what it say on the tin". For £12 and ease of application you can't go wrong even if it only lasts the summer.

I will be geting some and will let others know how it works for me. update to come in a few weeks
