Show me your ICE....
Discussion
With the cerb being rebuilt I am going to upgrade the audio. I don't want a really expensive system but I am probably looking at getting an amplified system with new speakers and head unit. The trouble is I have no idea about car audio so if you guys could show me what you have in your cerbs it would give me an idea as to where to start.
Carl Baker has some good ideas about what works with upgrading the speakers only.
As for a head unit I have a JVC AVX2 with additional Dab unit, plus a JVC Hal-4 aerial on the rear window. The Hal 4 easily has a long enough lead to run around the rear windscreen, behind the rear seats, down the centre console and into the passenger footwell, where I mounted the DAB add on unit.
Took me ages to decide to fit the external aerial as I didn't want to ruin the 'no external features' look, but the Hal4 aerial is so thin you hardly notice it.
I have standard speakers, but have added a Pioneer TS WX11A 150w powered subwoofer in/under the helmet holder. It still looks like I have the helmet slot.

i have put 17cm pioneer speakers in the front door cards, kept the standard the rear pioneer speakers along with the door card tweeters. i will upgrade the 6x9 in the centre console and possibly put on in the rear parcel shelf(suken area) covered up to hide from prying eyes.
I am going to get a pioneer amp and 10" pioneer sub to go in the helmet holder in a custom box with a stealth cover so people dont see it and break in to steal it. photos will be taken once ive bought the sub and amp.

The 6x9 was a very early fitment, it's not seen on many cars. I have Carl's MB Quart speaker setup in the car and amps going in when I get round to it and Carl has some time. The bias is towards sounds quality rather than massive base, if that's your bag, MadMark is your man.
HaHa!! cheeky fooker LOLI got quality too.... New subs, the others fell to bits shortly after you heard it! :-)

Hi Mark, I'm also considering updating the ICE - mainly for longer motorway journeys as I tend to drive round with the windows down listening to the exhaust on most of my trips, heh heh
Please could you let me know here or PM what options you are considering. Car and Bike instalations are a long way from Sheffield - but I'd rather get the job done well once, if you know what I mean.
Ideally I'm after something fairly inobtrusive, can link to an i-pod, and has no external ariels.

I am not sure what I am going to do yet. The instalation that steve_t has costs about a £1k but does not include a headunit. I am going to wait until the car is back in one piece and see how much money I have spent on it before I commit to a £1k audio system. Tbh if I had to choose I would rather get a set of nitrons or get the head ported but as I said it all depends on how much I end up spending to get it back on the road.
True enough but you don't have to go nuts on price to get good sound quality. The base model MB Quart speakers are very good and have built in crossovers saving some install hassles. You could start out with these front and rear and then add the pair of woofers in the helmet hole at a later date if you wanted to. However, having run with the woofers unplugged recently (dying immobiliser) I did notice how much they fill in the low frequencies, so I would recommend them. Also (as always) if you want to listen to it for yourself before parting with your money I'll try to meet you somewhere convenient to both of us.

Mark - Carl Baker is worth talking to just for his advice, eg - Don't waste your time with a big bass sub woofer type XYZ because Fibreglass cars cut out all the bass frequncies in the range blah blah blah, you get the idea. he really does know what he is talking about, his part time 'hobby' is playing in a band, mixing music, and he's an accoustic's guru who specialises in TVR's. You'll end up wanting to buy the equipment off him because he's so helpful - and guess what, you'll actually end up saving money.
