Hi all,

Looking to purchase an early 4.2 Cerb and a few it seems have not had the clutches changed. As i understand it the early cars which had the earlier 4.2 clutch are now obsolete so what are the best/feasible options as opposed to changing the whole clutch/bellhousing/slave cylinder/flywheel?

1) Have the clutch relined?

2) Remove clutch and have friction plates/diaphram replaced?

3) Change clutch to 4.5 type (AP/raceprooved) and grind down mounting bolts to clear earlier bellhousing? (Assuming this has been done)

4) Any easier options which i dont know about?

Also does the Speed Six require bellhousing/slave cylinder/flywheel change for a 4.5 unit for the clutch change or are they just a simple matter of changing only the clutch on those

thanks all

If fingers are ok get the plates re-lined,if your fitting a new slave cylinder make sure you get the right one, there are 3 different types, you wont know which one is fitted to your car until you remove the old one.

Can the slave cylinder be refurbised with the same seal kit or are there 3 different ones as well?

Does the Speed Six have clutch availability issues, i.e. having to change flywheel/bellhousing etc

not as knowledgable as most on here with ajp clutches, but I have an early 4.2 and the engine didn`t come with the clutch at all, just got in touch with Raceprooved and bought the complete kit, fitted myself with no problems.

Did they supply the early type clutch on its own or a new flywheel/bellhousing too Clive?

the bellhousing is a normal ajp to t5 box, and I had a new flywheel because I fitted a raceprooved lightened one, but to my knowledge it would have fitted to my old flywheel no problems anyway, I`ve never heard of any differences or problems with early 4.2 clutches, to make sure I`d give someone like raceprooved a phone and find out for certain.

Fantastic, do you have their number by any chance?

I would not fit new seals to an old slave cylinder as the bores get scored and its the cylinder itself thats the problem.Seals are the same for all types.

Fair point, i think the slave cylinder is ok on the car im looking at, no apparent leaks or issues with the pedal except for the fact i think its gone slightly softer as the clutch has started to slip. Inspection on removal will be the only way to know for sure.

With what you said Clive, From my understanding after reading on various forums and speaking to suppliers, the early 4.2 clutch is now obsolete so must be replaced with the speed 6/4.5 clutch which in turn has a diff bellhousing/flywheel which is what im trying to weigh up before i take the plunge. A guy i spoke to in Sheffield explained that they can reline the clutch and supply a replacement clutch cover too which seems the best short term solution without breaking the bank!!

if the slave cylinder components are in very good condition mine was i replaced the seals with the uprated ones just stripped all the parts of the slave cylinder which has three parts to it good clean and a rub round with very smoothe wet n dry and put back together my clutch now is perfect and has been for quite a while now, best to undo the four little counter sunk allen pins with an impact driver i did and they came out no problem you dont want to round off the hex head with an allen key as this will cause you some problems and they are very tight mine were anyway.

Which uprated seal kit did you use? Was it easy taking the slave apart or is it a press fitting?

Hi Clive,

I'm about 90% sure the bell housing you have is the later 4.5 type.

Cheers
