I have an early(97) 4.2, recently the clutch pedal pushed right to the floor and i had great difficulty engaging gears. Upon driving home this got steadily worse, i was told to get a look at the master cylinder. Right enough there was some fluid dripping down the pedal SO; The part has now been replaced and fully bled. I now have a pretty full pedal but the problem is it still won't engage gear.

So i'm thinking it's likely to be something more sinister such as - snapped clutch fingers, slave has gone etc?

Any of you guys experienced the same problem? I got on to Raceproved and Russel will hopefully be giving me a ring back tomorrow. Does anyone have the uprated raceproved clutch and slave fitted to a 4.2? how much difference does it make? Will it be well worth opting for this over the AP unit? I was also told that, there is a newer version currently in development so i won't be able to purchase one at the minute. But that's worst case scenario. I've only had my cerb since 1st May, it's done just under 35k. Got a fair amount of SH but no record of a clutch being replaced, thinking this must have been done already at some point though as surely they wouldnt last to 35k.

Thanks greatly for any help/support

Sorry to hear of the problem, but that's all part of the fun !
Thrash the Cerb from standing starts all the time and a clutch wont last long, it's not uncommon for a clutch to last 35K, thats the sign of a string of previous careful owners, so consider yourself fortunate.
I've got the Raceproved Slave in mine, it's a lot lighter than the original.
I think both the AP and Raceproved clutch's will have there share of fans. ASFAIK they're both good units.

so you have replaced the slave cylinder yes?? did you make sure you got the right length push rod for it?

have you made sure the nut and threded bar on the back of the clutch pedal is adjusted correctly so a full push of the clutch gives a full push on the slave piston rod. i tinkered with mine and thought i had adjusted the amount of push, but i had it wrong and had trouble with engaging gears, simple 5 minute adjustment and all was normal.

hope its an easy fix for you.

Hi if you are unable to change gear when car is idling then it may be the clutch. If you have the early type clutch and want to replace it you will need a new flywheel also. I had an early type clutch in my cerb which i reconditioned and it lasted me another 13k miles. So i bought anoither early clutch reconditioning kit (raceproved fingers, star locks and friction plate) with the aim of redoing my clutch as it was on its way out. Unfortunately as my flywheel needed replacing i couldnt use my early type clutch any more.

if you dont want to spend a small fortune yet replacing everything, i am selling my rebuilt kit, you can also buy slave cylinder seals instead of a new slave, and you ve done the job at a fraction of the cost.

if you had fluid on the back of the clutch pedal then the slave master cylinder seals are gone and will contiue to leak fluid.

the master cylinders are about £40-£60 and an easyish job to change. i would do this before you go having the clutch inspected/box removed etc. as it will need to be done anyway

Hi Chris, first of all i would like you to talk to me directly before you do this on a public forum, we spoke last week and i asked you to let me know if your clutch kit arrived on Saturday. Otherwise i would speak to the post office as i had kept the receipt. I never heard from you so i assumed that it did. so it seems it hasnt now?

If you havent received it, i will try to find the postage receipt and see whats happened, but cant promise anything after so many days of not hearing from you.

Jools now called spitfireV8 or something can confirm that i bought a kit from him, and Str8 6 can confirm that i didnt fit it and i went for a new clutch instead as my flywheel was buggered. you can talk to them if you think im genuine. there would be no reason for me to still keep this item and not send it to you. I have sold and bought loads of things on PH and havent had any issues.

regards

Kostas

i have worked on kostas's car in the past including a not cheap engine job, found him to be a nice guy and 100% genuine.

Just to back this up.... No you haven't been had. I've known Kostas for many years, we've even owned classic TVR's together- there is no reason to think he wouldn't have sent the kit. Instead of suggesting that someone may be underhand on a public forum why not contact them directly to get their version of events? There is an e-mail facility on PH and i'm pretty sure you must have had his number to discuss the kit in the first place? If you can't get him on e-mail send one to me and i'll pass your details on.

Have you been in contact with your local sorting office?

I'd like so emphasise that I didn't set out to offend anyone.

I was simply looking for some back up for Kostas. I'm sure that's easy understood as i don't personally know him. I had reasons to suspect one of which is that he said he never had Paypal, i found that slightly odd.

So thanks for vouching, i kind of thought that this was the sort of place where it'd be ok to ask for some solid reference on a man i'd never met but had sent cheque for over £100. I agree totally that he seemed genuine anda nice guy yes but i can't trust someone on that basis alone.

Bernard Madoff - nuff said?

Anyway, I do apologise for offending anyone and appreciate the replies.
