Iv got a 96 4.2 cerb, about a month a go a took a friend out for a rather lively ride in the cerb, and it drove like it should but when i come to start it later to put it into the garage i noticed that it felt like it was running on 6 cylinders.

I Checked all the leads and plugs and they seemed to be ok and realised that my odd bank wasnt firing with a bright spark on 2 of the cylinders. I swapped the leads around to see if it was them but it wasnt so i decided to replace the coil packs. This still didnt help. So i thought that it must have to be some dodgy wiring.

My next plan was to remove the engine wiring loom and tidy up any bad or melted looking wires. I also got all of the injectors checked whilst i had them out and they were all fine.
I checked the continuity from the man plug in the wing to each of the wires to the coil packs and they were all fine. So put it all back together and i even changed the ignition module in the boot and i still have the same symptoms.

so to conclude iv changed
the coil packs
the ignition module
and tommoz i will change the leads and plugs as they have just arrived. ( but i dont think they will change any thing )

So has anyone had a similar problem or can give me any advise as its driving me mad and i miss my tvr.

On the drivers side bank, i think its the 2 and 3. I put those little spark testers on between the lead and the plug.

I'd ditch the spark tester and pull the plugs out and look at the spark on the plugs themsselves.

If it is 2 & 3 it's unlikely to be electical (ignition) due to those cylinders not using the same part of the coil pack or ignition driver (I think).

I'd be looking at getting a comp tester and checking what the cylinder pressures are and also get the injectors out and get them cleaned and flowed.

Does it not run aat all on those 2?

Check the easy things first. Mine is in for an engineconversion. When they did take a closer look on the timingwheel which is on the flywheel it was damaged.

I didn't have misfires, but it could have caused it easily.

Along the same lines as FlyingDutchie.

The magnetic pick up that points at the flywheel has been know to get a lot of metal particles stuck to it as it is magnetic.

May be worth removing (MEASURE FIRST) and clean all the crud off?

Easiest from under the car, drivers side of the engine near to where the dipstick enters the sump (by the flywheel).
