Hi everyone... driving home the other day, the Cerb decided to develop a new fault - namely that the gear lever travel decided to double and not select properly, so I nursed it home (in 3rd) and rang my local Indie. With the enginee off, the gear lever was only travel;ling forwards and backwards (ie not even finding the gear). The on-the-phone diagnosis was that the selector gate had gone - so gearbox out etc

Crap

Rang the AA to get the car recovered to the Indie - Turns out that the AA man worked in the TVR factory for 8 years and probably built the car in the first place biggrin

He then fixes it with an M-8 bolt and some superglue... RESULT! I think its time to go to the pub and celebrate

had the gear stick bolts rattled loose from the selector ontop of the box?

did he access it from inside the car or from underneath?

Yep, thats the one... He pulled the gear stick gaiter to one side to expose the missing bolt. The superglue was inplace of an M-8 spring washer and was indeed to lock the thread (low strength loctite used in case I ever need to get it off at some point and to stop it vibrating loose in the future)

The selector gate is only a flat plate with some holes in it and some grooves connecting the holes. The gearstick then has a spring and a ball bearing on the bottom pressed into said grooves.

Even if the spring broke and the ball bearing flew int the distance you'd still be able to select a gear, and in fact probably drive fairly normally if you were careful.

I think the only possible diagnosis for that problem was bolt gone from the stick itself or selector forks all broken.

loosing a bolt from the gear lever would still allow side ways movement but pull and pushing movements would have to be done very softly

TVR thought that silicone and cable ties was good enough for most things in the first place, an M-8 bolt and superglue sounds like an up grade laugh
